CAL race week
Randy Alcorn2011-04-26 03:50 UTC
Ahoy all,
I am not to particular about the CAL yacht club since they closed down our old
web site. but I was reading the invite to CAL race week. What do you say we get
5 CAL 29's together for a one design class. Wouldn't that be a kick in this day
of flat bottom race boats? The highest rating is 180 and that fits our class.
It's June 4-5.
I will go if you will.

Randy,
If any Cal 29 needs crew let me know, maybe I can go around to the taverns and slip some blokes a Micky, drag them over to the wharves, and throw them in the hold.
Seriously, tho, I'd volunteer.

Sorry, thought I was replying directly to Randy... My personal wherabouts are of little interest I am sure unless somebody in Cal land has a sailboat on a local Heart of America reservoir. I've sailed Jackson County Lake, Lake Perry and Milford Reseervoir in and around Kansas City and I think it was Lake Norman in Oklahoma. That was a blurry time.

Randy, we did have CAL 29 one design starts in the Good Old Boat Regatta in Annapolis for a number of years. The person responsible for marshaling the troops is pon this web site. However, he no longer owns a CAL.
Philosophical question: Should it be CAL or Cal as in CAL 29 or Cal 29?
Cheers

Doesn't matter; I call it one classic boat. We should all be so lucky

I harbor antipathy toward excessive capitalization and get annoyed when
I see references to "HAM radio." Let's go with Cal. In my field (law),
there's a tendency toward creeping capitalization. We capitalize
everything, on some ill-founded theory that it makes it more
important. It's like those 18th century texts, before things were
standardized and capitalization was a random procedure. I have
Polyurethane paint on my Fingers today And it won't come Off for a long
time.

HAM are the initials of the three founders of the hobby and thus are

It's possible that you're right, although the ARRL is a pretty careful
organization about things of that sort. Snopes had no information when
I typed in "ham radio." Wikipedia gives no indication of the origin
either. I just remember that in the distant past when I had a novice
license, it generally was not capitalized.

If you Google HAM radio, the references you get are uniformly "ham."

HAM are the initials of the three founders of the hobby and thus are
properly capitalized.

Chris, the question is: Would you rather own a "Cal 20" or a "CAL 20".
I harbor antipathy toward excessive capitalization and get annoyed when I
see references to "HAM radio." Let's go with Cal. In my field (law),
there's a tendency toward creeping capitalization. We capitalize
everything, on some ill-founded theory that it makes it more important.
It's like those 18th century texts, before things were standardized and
capitalization was a random procedure. I have Polyurethane paint on my
Fingers today And it won't come Off for a long time.

That appears to be a thorough & scholarly analysis. Even better, it
agrees with me, which makes it even more astute.
