FW: Half Off Intro to Sailing in Rock Hall

Husar, Charlie [USA]2011-05-09 14:31 UTC
Hi, All. I'm forwarding this because I know that our Chris H. from Canada spent an extended period of time in Rock Hall, MD (a lot more time than he expected). I thought I would make Chris experience pangs of nostalgia. Rock Hall is on the eastern shore of Chesapeake Bay some miles north of the Bay Bridge. Don't let the color of the water fool you (or the size of the boat). Don't know where Groupon gets their photos. One time they used a shot of folks holding ten pin balls in an ad for a duckpin house. Re: [Cal_Boats] FW: Half Off Intro to Sailing in Rock Hall

The Chesapeake and especially Rock Hall was an amazing time and experience for me. Far to many good stories to relate, from meeting the funniest and nicest ladies at the customs house in Baltimore, to staring down a 50 calibre machine gun as Obama was in town, in Feb, crossing the Chesapeake at night back to Rock Hall in Feb with Chris B oh about -10 outside, dog falling off the boat three times and me going for a swim, in Jan, learning where to eat in Rock Hall and not getting fleeced ($12.50 for bacon and eggs at one place as everyone knew me to be an out of "towner"), surprise visits from Chris B with a box of goodies, actually sailing the boat, getting eaten alive in Cohansey River as its the manly thing to do, (handed out deet to everyone and changed that tradition over night), getting written up in the local paper for presenting town council an opportunity to bring in fibre cable and improve the local economy thanks to google...(what ever happened to that) and a ton of stories that are not necessarily for sensitive ears. Folks I met and missed meeting are all remembered fondly, it's what travelling is all about for me. Then of course there was the gal who worked at the marina I stayed at. Now she was a blast....attitude was dead on. She was from Jersey so had to resist the Jersey jokes, in lieu of trashing the boat at night,..:) She no longer works there however. Kept a smile on my face during the toughest days. I think I know the lad running this school. If its who I think it is, you will be in good hands and he's a good guy. Checking the web counters, seems the site is being well visited. http://www.mdschool.com/bio_morton.htm Its a gorgeous area not to be missed. Several good marina's, and some very knowledgeable folks. Some places are bit pricey but there are suitable options. The town is not to be missed, In the winter its a cast of characters all 100 of em. Going for coffee at the only coffee house and Internet cafe open in the winter, it reminded me of Cheer's, as the same three lads in the same seats every day reading their books. Too funny, nice guys however. In the summer I must say I was disappointed some as the charm of the village had morphed into a sailing destination and far too many people and BMW's...:) When its small you know everyone, when it gets busy its different but its good for the town which is going through major restructuring to survive like so many small towns along that shoreline. It was a wonderful experience that presented more hardships then what I was expecting. Luckily for me I had spend time in the CDN Arctic so the 1:100 year storm was actually exciting. The nicest times were when the winds piped up over 30 knots and boat tide to the dock with eight lines, the glow of a kerosene light, some good food and a movie on the laptop and the wind screaming through the rigging....far too cool; dreams of Amundson, Perry and others. I had it good. Those poor soles were so badly prepared but survived and accomplished so much. A testament to the human spirit. Dam dog could not take it however (the wind storms), so had to motel it quite often as the poor thing would freak out as she hears the sound differently. Walking a 1000m dock 8 foot wide to get her off the boat at 0300 in 40-50mph winds, no lights, no safety lines, covered in ice, no one present, is an experience you do once. Same for spending the night in the van with the dog huddled beneath it,(far too friggen cold and no place to keep warm) no way she was gonna be confined that night. So the Mariner's Motel, room no.8 became our second home. Owners are amazing people and went out of their way to take care of us. Its nice to meet good people. /ch On Mon, May 9, 2011 at 10:31 AM, Husar, Charlie [USA] <hu… [at] bah.com > wrote: > > > Hi, All. Oh, sure, we all encounter some bad guys from time to time (ask me about shopping at Sears recently), but it's how you react to it that matters. We'd all rather go sailing with the people who find fun and value in life's detours, wouldn't we? This is schoolship-teaching season for me--vacation days spent teaching marine science to school groups on a local schooner. The water temp is 40° F (surface and 100 feet down) so it's not toasty to start with, and occasionally we have wind & rain. The instructors' principal role on the gray days is to be cheerleaders so the kids can focus on the learning and not on the discomforts. Yes, you can distract them. Chris Campbell
