Charlie, I used to use INTERLUX "AQUARIUS" before they discontinued it several years ago. It was a single-year Ablative paint (might have worked multi-year. don't recall) and worked pretty good for me on my 17' Day Sailer in upper Buzzards Bay (Mass, near Cape Cod). It was nice in that cleanup was with soap and water, no harsh solvents, it didn't have that "bottom paint smell" that one thinks of, but did have a very "latex paint" odor! I also used the PETIT equivalent one or two seasons, I didn't like it as well as the Aquarius, as it didn't seem to work as well. This was all in the mid to late 1990's, I'm sure technology has improved greatly since then. I "wet-sanded" the bottom each year in preparation for painting (bottom was hosed off and scrubbed with a soft brush within hours of haulout in Fall) using a scotch-brite pad. I wouldn't hesitate to use these paints again, if I could find them locally (avoiding expensive shipping costs), right now I've been using PETIT UNEPOXY until this year when I was able to get a quart can of Interlux FG Bottomkote on sale for $5 less than the quarts of UNEPOXY (Lost my job again, any small savings helps!). Most of the recent water-based paints seem to be a bit higher priced than I really want to spend, especially due to my present financial situation. Does anyone have any sage words - good or bad - regarding water based bottom paints? They say they have coatings for fiberglas and wood as well as the Alumi-Koat.
