How does the galley faucet work?
vegasrigger2011-05-03 20:34
Hi group!
I have a CAL 27, and I can't figure out the sink faucet.
How do you make the water flow? It seems like I need to activate a pump of some sort, but the answer is eluding me!
Also, do you fill the tank directly, by bringing the supply into the cabin, or am I missing something?
The hoses are pretty grungy that supply the faucet. Is there a solution easier than replacing them?
Thanks!
Darcy

Perhaps you have a foot pump that pulls water directly from the lake?
Ours did. There would be a lever mounted at the base of the galley in
front of the sink that you pump, gently, with your foot. If so, there
will be a hose from the pump to a thru-hull that you may have to open.

Hi Darcy,
Our 27 has a holding tank under the v-birth. I have to fill it from a hose through the hatch, or with gallon water jugs. Not the easiest, but I don't have to do it that often. We only use that water for brushing teeth, washing dishes... stuff like that - not drinking (don't have a filter installed yet).
Does the faucet have a pump action handle next to it? If it does, it is most likely an older model whale pump... or something similar. Sometimes, it just needs to be primed. I literally sucked on then of the faucet like a straw until water came through (while pumping) and it works a whole season after I do that. When I let it sit for a while, I might have to "prime" it again. I probably have a very small pressure leak in the system somewhere... such is life.
If no handle... foot pump?
If no hand and no foot pump, is there any wiring anywhere? Is there an electric pump?
Otherwise...???

Matt, I hope you mean "water tank" instead of "holding tank". You could have some strange stuff coming out of your faucet.
CAL 25s had/have a hand pump on the sink spigot. I doubt any of them have worked or been used in many years. Most of us use the sink for parts/junk storage. Sink fills up with "stuff" on every race.
Cheers

My 2-29 has pressurized potable water at galley and a hand pump allowing for saltwater rinse. The hand pump drew water from the galley drain thru hull....I disconnected the hand pump for the obvious..

Charlie,
Definitely meant "water tank" - that is a scary thought! We don't have a holding take, we sport the porta-potty.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like priming the system will be the ticket!

Re: How does the galley faucet work? (Darcy)
Telephone Dave2011-05-12 15:07
Darcy,
Our Cal 27 pop-top ('72) has the water tank mounted under the port settee, filled with a hose brought in through the hatch. The PO replaced the original faucet (with a lever on the right side to manually pump from the tank)with an electric pump at the tank outlet and a foot switch mounted at the base of the galley sink. There was only one line running from the tank pump to the faucet. I replaced mine by attaching a new tube of the same size (Home Depot, WM)to the disconnected tank end with an 'in-line' coupler, and carefully pulled the old line out while feeding on the new line ("fishing the line") end. I recommend 2 people to make this happen easily.
BTW, my pump failed in 2002, and didn't replace it. The boat partially sank in 2003 at the slip (bilge pump/siphon problem) and marina water entered the tank. We don't use it any more. We bring bottled water when we take her out...
Regards,
Dave Leasia
