Stanchion Replacement
matthewwenman2011-05-30 06:35
Hi Everyone,
Has anyone replaced their stanchions with new ones, using a generic design? I had a stanchion break last year, and am still dealing with the aftermath of the broken stanchion, and the deck repair that goes along with it (SO FRUSTRATING!). I was staring at the broken stanchion, which I have since had rebuilt/strengthened, and I noticed some pretty blaring design flaws. (74 Cal 2-27)
The base of the stanchion is easily bent with leverage from the top. All four stanchions on my boat are slightly at the base plates. This breaks the seal on the deck, allowing water underneath. If the water gets through you have a leak and/or (in my case) water stuck under the stanchion base where it erodes the metal and it eventually breaks.
How often do you all rebed your stanchions? If you do it right, shouldn't this be a once in a not-so-often job?
Thinking that if I'm going through all this work, I could just replace the stanchions instead of having them all rebuilt.

check out the replacement stanchions at Garhauer. Also, you can call them and talk to them. If I remember correctly, new stanchion is about $52, unless you go with the heavy duty @$65.

I have a 1980 227 in fresh water two years ago I had to have a couple of
stanchions repaired so I rebedded all of them for the first time. Unlike
what others have said all of mine had full size backing plates. With the
change to a hanging locker on Starboard in 1980 they were not easy to
remove, worse to replace, yours should be easier. TOP-IN- QUALITY from
Michigan has a line of stanchions and will make custom models to match
yours.
Good luck,

I just replaced all of mine... 8. Wanted the base with removable tube. Went with Garhaur... $30 for base and $30 for tube. Great quality and great price. Larger bases than the original Pearson.
Good Luck!!
