Through Hull Damage 2-29
James2011-05-31 15:21
I ran over a King Crab float and lead....nicely brushed over the hull and keel and I went off without being hung up. I was on a broad reach running at hull speed.
Soon Salt water was coming in from somewhere. We were able to get the engines started and head up-wind towards port 5 hour away....pumps worked and soon the water was out and the leak halted.
Tried to sail again, salt water immediately. We were over on Port pretty hard, and in following the thru-hulls, isolated it to the speed indicator which has a small paddle wheel up next to the head 3/4" intake under the forward setee.
Anybody damaged one of these things before an can I remove the paddle sensor while in the water to see if indeed my assumptions were correct?

mines a Raymarine and it came new with a plug so i could untread the wheel
sensor and push the almost identical unit in its place to plug the hole minus
the wheel and wire of course. then just thread the cap to surcure it. ths is
done to clean the wheel unit and works very well also recall a friend of mine
haveing the same setup 13 years ago so i feel this is not a new design so as
long as you have the plug for yours or can look it up to see if you can buy it
you should be good. Or if the waters not too cold jump in and take a look or
use a rubber ball and string to plug hole.
So if the back of your unit inside the haul has a threaded ring the answer
should be yes its removable. but have a back up if you take it apart it may be
facured and only staying togeather while its threaded and in worse case fall
apart in your hands and not go back togeather but not very likly the case. good
luck in any case.

Thanks everybody. I'm a bit more confident pulling the plug with all of your expertise. One of my friends suggested I place a toilet plunger over the exterior.
Oh! Here's one for the learning department. Yours truly placed the forward sub branch panel and fluxgate compass in the same setee environment as this thru-hull. It looks as though my re-wiring project has a phase 2.
