Electric engine installation

Anne Racel2011-06-05 13:42 UTC
I've finally posted the info on the installation of the electric engine in my 2-29: http://boatjournal.stuffandjunk.net There are several related posts, plus a link to more pictures. We took it out for a spin yesterday and it performed beautifully. It was definitely quieter than the 9.9 HP outboard that I've been using lately, and, with the engine compartment completely opened so I could check things as we went, it made less noise the diesel I took out last year. So I'm guessing it'll be a lot quieter once I put the step back in place. We could definitely talk to each other without shouting while it ran, and hear the music without blasting it. I haven't stress tested the batteries yet, to see how far I can go on a charge. But that will happen in a couple of weeks when I take the boat from Yorktown down to Portsmouth for Cock Island in a couple of weeks. I am going to have a backup generator, just in case (can you say 'hybrid'?). No solar panels yet. I'm lucky enough to have a way of charging It while at the docks, so I'm not completely off the grid. And most of my boating is done from this location; I don't cruise away from home much. But it is *so* nice to not have the diesel/gas/oil/petroleum product smell out of the cabin! Portable gensets [ was Electric engine installation

Hi Anne - Interesting info. Please note that any generator operated on a boat _must be a marine unit_, not a land based unit. This is for the safely of the boat and crew. All marine gensets will have the fuel and exhaust system designed for use on a boat. Land based units [ especially portable gasoline gensets ] have no fuel system safety features that are found on marine units. Also, the dry exhaust system of a portable gas genset is non - marine approved. Should your boat burn, or explode, and the insurance company discovers a non marine genset was aboard, they will rightly refuse the claim. *Joe DeMers - owner* Sound Marine Diesel LLC SoundMarineDiesel.com <http://www.soundmarinediesel.com/> *phone & fax (860) 666-2184* On 6/5/2011 9:42 AM, Anne Racel wrote: > > > I've finally posted the info on the installation of the electric > engine in my 2-29: > > http://boatjournal.stuffandjunk.net > > There are several related posts, plus a link to more pictures. > > We took it out for a spin yesterday and it performed beautifully.
