What is the proper mast rake on a Cal 30-2 with7/8 rig and a stock mast?

After sailing, my senior sailing mentor, the one who sold me on buying a Cal 24 Oldie, hauled a lawn rake to the top of his mast so the metal tangs stuck above it. It kept the birds off and his decks cleaned. Somehow, I get the feeling tho, that you must mean something else? West Marine matches prices, so if you find a genuine "Mast Rake" bring the ad or quote to your local West Marine store for the same price... I was trying to think of something for a mast hoe, but decided not to touch it. Sorry, mooserent, but I don't know your name. Anyway, I have found that mast rake is a variable value based on the individual boat. I have two CAL 25s (both racing now since I lent one out). One is an old model (say 1967), and other other is 1974 with a different interior and lead ballast shape. I tuned the rigs by shortening the forestay until the boat has a neutral helm in, say, 8 knots of air. It turned out that the forestay on the older boat is 6-7 inches longer than the newer one. I was amazed. the visible difference in the rake of the older boat mast is very obvious. Yet, the boat perform similarly. Of course, both boats have the tree trunk mast with no bend. The shorter the forestay (moving masthead forward), the less round-up characteristic you get. A neutral helm is harder to drive, but presents less drag from the rudder. At some point, the boat sags off when going to windward, meaning you have push away on the stick to make her come up. Hope this helps (like all answers that are "depends...") My general practice is to distribute my money among non-West Marine suppliers when possible, to preserve options. So I went to the Hamilton Marine web site and found the little things....less than four bucks for two. What the heck, I'll order 4 just to have a couple extras. Total price of product, less than 8 bucks. Add shipping.....whoa!! About $14 for shipping!!!! So I sent Hamilton am e-mail about how they were making it hard for me to send them the money that otherwise might go to West Marine. There was some feeble excuse about UPS and FedEx policies, blah blah blah, but then they said that I could request USPS mailing in the "comments" box on the order page. So I did. Shipping via USPS = $2.58, even though Hamilton shipped my four tiny bronze pad eyes--indestructible items--in a cube box, 6" on each side, and filled with brown paper stuffing. Chris Campbell > >

I can't drive to West Marine for $2.58. That is great to know. Do you get a shipping quote ahead of time or just take your chances? Ya I got caught with that too. So now I just go to West and have them price match if there is a local franchise available. They ship it to the store for free call you when it in, and just go pickit up. Lots of places make money on shipping. If that package had come to Canada you can add 45 for brokerage fees. So much for free trade..:) /ch On Mon, Jun 6, 2011 at 10:14 AM, Chris Campbell <cc… [at] lsnm.org> wrote: > > > On 6/3/2011 10:17 PM, ng… [at] comcast.net wrote: > > > > Well, I bet you could buy one at West Marine for $99.00 or close to that. > > > I needed a couple little bronze pad eyes (eye straps) to secure things on > the interior of the Cal 20.
