FW: Moving Sale at Sailrite Annapolis
Husar, Charlie [USA]2011-06-11 03:08 UTC
For those of you in the Annapolis area who do your own sewing. The place was handy periodically, but that is business. I'm not sure how Indiana is a hotter market. I'm sure someone will let me know. There will now be business space available in Eastport Annapolis.
Take Care

This is inconvenient news as I always had something to get there
whenever I passed through. It was nice to be able to go into the store
within walking distance from the dinghy landing. The folks that worked
there were always very helpful and had good ideas on how to accomplish
various projects. I don't understand how moving away from America's
sailing capital helps their business.

They are probably moving to a mail order only format via the net...so
another retailer that moves to the cloud to sell there products, which they
already have been doing for a long time. If you look at the cost of rent
staff and warehousing of products in Eastport, vs direct sales from that
location then is probably a cost cutting move to keep price competitive. As
most of their products are petro based this may account for a rise in cost
their supplier base. So if they buy in volume and sell it on line, verse
direct sales and all associated costs, they can keep the price down and
maintain close control on margins.ie: profitability. In short, Eastport was
probably costing them too much overhead compared to existing sales from the
net.

Yeah, I understand. They are not in the boaters' charity business. There
is a certain satisfaction of having knowledgeable human interaction and
since it seems every boat and application is different, FAQ's just don't
cut it sometimes. I'll still buy from them online anyway.

Even as an online business, Sailrite does good customer service. I got advice from one of the owners once when I was having trouble with a dodger I was building. He got on the phone and talked me through some glitch I was having. Their online prices are competitive with local establishments in my area. I hope they continue to prosper.

There is nothing wrong with an online business. The key is stellar customer
support and service. If you nail those two you never loose a customer and
have repeat business. Its so simple a formula, its amazing that not everyone
is doing it. Sadly too few are.
Recently I asked Raymarine, how much juice the X=5 system uses based on real
world data for a 9K vessel properly trimmed. The download manuals reads
10-24A for the drive unit which is way to high. The response from customer
support via email, not phone, in the cue for 20 minutes on hold and then you
get asked to leave a message, was the drive unit stalls out at 8 Amps. The
response took 2 days, and is meaningless. Will I buy another Raymarine
Product. Nope. The complete opposite with ProMarineer when my GI blew up in
the winter. Almost 30 minutes with the head engineer to diagnose the problem
whether I bought a new one or not. So guess what brand I bought...:)

Re: [Cal_Boats] FW: Was Sailrite now ProMariner
Wayne Gillikin2011-06-13 13:33 UTC
I want to add a comment about ProMariner. I installed one of their chargers
summer before last and this year the fan quit. I called them to see if they
would help me test the unit to see if the fault was the fan or the board. They
said they would rather not do that because I might juice myself and that I
needed to send the unit back.
I got a return authorization but had no proof of purchase so I figured I was
simply screwed. The unit was to arrive at their RI shop last Tuesday and I
hadn't heard anything by Thursday so I called. Two minutes on the phone. They
were sending me out a new unit and it would probably ship that day. Zero
dollars changed hands. Not even shipping. Like Chris, when I finally need a new
unit guess which brand I'll choose.

Wayne:
While Joe D does not sell via the web, his shop gets it as well. Its the
service component that makes or breaks a company or business. No wonder the
lad has record sales and a good product to boot. West on the other hand is
good for over the counter no questions asked exchanges and now doing price
matching. On the phone, I would rate them a 6 out of 10.
