Finally in the water today, 3 hour trip up the Calumet River. Bonus was as we approached the O'Brien lock it was opening! That never happens. Dodged a few tows, those guys work 24/7. I stayed behind one that needed numerous bridge lifts, but when we got to the last one he put the hammer down and was gone. On to the open lake and 6 miles to my harbor. Ugh. Winds NE and strong enough to make the lake nasty. 3-5 feet, just enough to make the trip a little damp. They did the NOODS here this weekend, I think the racers loved it. They always want more wind. Easy for the RC folks also, set a course and go. Now we just have to step the mast and sail. Regards, David Dobbs, CAL29 411

Flare Gun Website

All, Last year, I think, there was a lively discussion regarding piracy and flare guns. I seem to remember that someone here posted a URL for a company that markets a large bore (37 mm??) flare gun to the marine industry. Options included a longer barrel, shoulder stock, and even a SS option. I also think the company was located in the northeast US. I searched the Cal_Boats message board, but I came up with nothing. Does anyone here have the URL bookmarked or can remember the company that manufactures this? Thanks, Michael

Mike: Sprry no URL. Just a head up however, If you are heading into Mexico and parts south, (if I remember correctly you are on the west coast) make sure to not have live rounds on board when you check in to get your zarpa. Same when you check out. If they find them, you are in a world of hurt that is really not needed. An over sized flare will do significant damage, provided that you are able to use it. These lads are no fools and chances are you may not have the time you think you have. On the other hand if it makes you feel more comfortable, then why not. The short answer from where I sit and have seen, if they want it, they will get it, it much more advisable simply to not put yourself in a situation that provides opportunity. Best of luck /ch

I remember the website you are asking about. I didn't see a stainless steel version though. Here's the address:http://www.batesanddittus.com/SML-37_Launcher.html Mike M.
