anyone know of a good resource for info on the diameter standing rigging used on a 1969 CAL Cruising 36? Having a boat 2500 miles away is a bugger of a commute!

I found the dimensions of the rigging, standing and running, for our 1967 cal
36, in a folder, which I will get from the boat today. If you haven't already
gotten the info from somebody else, since I just saw your post. Our commute is
49 miles, and after spending the weekend with her, we have to go back today
anyway. Helen...let me know.

Hi Helen. I'm trying to find the headstay dimensions and the clevis pin size. thinking of changing furlers. Makes me wonder if the racing 36 and the cruising 36 both have the same headstay dimensions?
I envy your commute to her. mine is about 5000 round trip!

It's always fun to spread a little jealousy. My commute from home to
the pretty Cal 20 is about 1-1/2 mile, maybe less. 98% of the trips are
via bicycle.
But you can make me jealous by describing your perfect weather. Here in
the upper Great Lakes we seem to have skipped spring. Today is our
second summer day, more or less. Lots of cool, gray, damp weather and
too much wind. Today (finally, but hey, it's Monday) is a really nice
day--sunny, upper 70s ashore, and a SW wind of moderate nature. Maybe
the genoa will come out of the bag for the first time tonight.
Yesterday I sailed my other boat. The open water of Saginaw Bay is 2
mi. down the river from the marina. I powered down the river because
the wind was right on the nose, 15 knots apparent. I got out to the
deeper water and turned out of the channel to raise sail, and the wind
stopped. Nothing is less fun than no wind and a leftover chop to roll
the boat and flop all the shape out of the sails. So I motorsailed a
while until a nice breeze came up and beat until I came to the shore,
came about and... the wind stopped again. More swells; sails slatting;
Chris cursing the wind gods. I tried motorsailing again after allowing
a reasonable interval for things to improve. As you might guess, the
wind didn't come up again until I was back in the marina.
Oh well, summer will arrive soon, I hope.
At least I got some compliments on the boat's good looks. Or maybe I
should say that the boat got some compliments, but since I varnish all
the mahogany and spruce, I take some of the credit.

Hi, Reggie -- If I were going to my CC36 soon, I'd do some measuring for
you. Meanwhile, take a look at sailboatdata.com. It has pages with
specs for both the C36 & CC36: headstay dimensions, at least, but I
don't recall seeing wire diameters. I believe that, since the CC36 uses
a mast cross section the same size as the C40 and larger than the C36,
the stays are probably heavier-duty also. I recall that on mine the
headstay and backstay are also heavier than the shrouds. -- Bob

Hi Reggie & Helen,
For what it's worth, I just replaced the headstay on my 1966 Cal-36 this
past weekend. The main goal was to accommodate a CDI FF9 roller furler,
which didn't fit over the original headstay. To be upfront, I don't know to
what extent the mast / standing rigging has been changed over the years
before I got it..
Not having any documentation on the wire size myself, I measured it with a
set of calipers, and came out with 0.290 inches - right in between 9/32 and
5/16". I decided to go with the "larger is better" theory and went with
5/16" wire. In retrospect, the 5/16 looks just a bit larger than what used
to be there, so the original was probably really 9/32". Mine had 0.5"
clevis pins on both ends. Not sure on the exact headstay length - to keep
it simple, I ordered 45 feet, mounted it to a Hayn Hi-MOD compression eye,
climbed the mast with that one end, and mounted it to the existing toggle
with a 1/2" clevis pin. I pre-mounted the new toggle and open-body
turnbuckle on the lower end. Then, I just stretched the wire to fit the
space in between, and mounted a compression stud on the lower end direct to
the turnbuckle.
Worked well, and I appear to have ended up with about 4 feet of excess
headstay wire. The Hayn fittings were $pricey$, but look nice and were very
easy to install. Hopefully, they'll last for a long time to come.
Now for the fun part, trying to install the CDI furler on top of it...
