shortening transmission shift cable

with my engine repower the transmission cable is now too long and mechanical friction created make moving the lever very difficult. Are those cables sold in specific lengths, or if I go into the binnacle can I cut a foot off the end and reattach to the shift handle? Also, can this be done by (simply-HA!) removing the compass or do you generally have to unbolt the binnacle? As always, thanks. Bob Connell "Jollygood!", Cal 31, #59 Shilshole Bay, WA

the right part is the right lenghts...sometimes you can reroute the cable and change the shifter and trans arms or holes but... smooth shifting cable will last longer with out breaking and lock in or out of gear ... this only happens at the worest times like just before you crunch into a boat or dock or when a crew member is on the helm with the detached shift lever in their hand ...opps ...... fix with the CORRECT size....edward From: mike farrell <ve… [at] yahoo.com> To: Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com Sent: Tue, July 5, 2011 5:05:27 PM Subject: Re: [Cal_Boats] shortening transmission shift cable YES, NO, NO My Best, Mike F. --- On Tue, 7/5/11, Bob Connell <jo… [at] yahoo.com> wrote: >From: Bob Connell <jo… [at] yahoo.com> >Subject: [Cal_Boats] shortening transmission shift cable >To: "Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com" <Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com> >Date: Tuesday, July 5, 2011, 8:17 AM > > > > > >with my engine repower the transmission cable is now too long and mechanical >friction created make moving the lever very difficult.
