New deck? Cal 25

Kevin Swart2011-07-14 02:20 UTC
I would like to talk with somebody that has put a new deck on their Cal 25. There has been some conversation in the past on the Cal 25 site, but my computer crashed and I lost the password to sign in. Their recovery system doesn't seem to be working for me. Looking forward to some questions answered. Offlist is preferred: kgs-one-one-three (at) gmail-dot-com you know what to do. Thanks! Kevin 1970 Cal 25 #1285

If there is a chance an on list discussion is always best even if its long and protracted as everyone learns. There may be some deck issues that may need attention on my 29. Im sure there are others. /ch On Wed, Jul 13, 2011 at 10:20 PM, Kevin Swart <kg… [at] earthlink.net> wrote: > ** > > > I would like to talk with somebody that has put a new deck on their Cal > 25. Happy to oblige.. I just didn't want to clutter the list too much. I've been contacted by 2 list members and responded to one but I'll repost it here so we can all join in the fun! To let you know where I stand I have all of the plywood out except for trace amounts of veneer still stuck to the old deck. I've been using a wood chisel and wallpaper scraper. I don't know how clean I should have the fiberglass. Should it be completely bare or will the little bits of old veneer be fine left alone. Should the glass be roughed up? I built a new beam last year- laminating White Oak and African Mahogany together. All grain running the same direction. Prettiest piece of wood nobody will ever see! I made the beam between 1/4 and 3/8 thicker than the original. I've trimmed the bulkhead to address that. Old beam is out so I will be able to get the ends cut to the proper angle and length with no problem. Got 2 sheets of 3/8 Sapele from Boulter plywood. Marine grade British standard stuff. I plan on covering the bottom of the sheets with 4 oz glass with West system clear stuff. I figure on putting the beam in place temporarily while the epoxy sets then removing it to glass the plywood. Will I need to varnish the epoxy after that or can I just go with the epoxy finish? I have a few holes to patch. There was a vent hole portside forward and a waste drain on the deck for a head that is long gone. Have gelcoat, resin, glass mat and cloth. Patch holes first from the inside or do it from the outside? Been thinking about that and I think from the outside might be the better way to go. I'd like to get the non skid pattern in there but the flexible molds for that are just too expensive. Heavy duty cardboard to make templates to cut the plywood. Planning on putting a hinged mast base so I don't have to rely on a gin pole. The mast base is sealed from inside. there was one hole I drilled through it a couple of years ago and the one hole for the old wire for the running light. The base appears to be in good shape and I don't really want to open it up. See any issues with that Idea? I'm on Oneida Lake in New York so the boat has only seen fresh water. So I guess my questions are how clean should the fiberglass be for the epoxy bond? Do I need to put varnish over the epoxy finish on the underside of the deck? I expect that I'll have more questions as I get further into the project! I can send you pics if you like. I do plan on properly sealing every deck penetration so this never happens again. Looking forward to opinions and advice. First, cleanliness of the underside of the deck before re-coring: Seems to me that you want it smooth so the new plywood lies well against the underside of the deck. A bit of remaining veneer, if well secured, won't matter much unless it's thick and causes voids between deck and new core. Second, as to varnishing epoxy, yes, do it. Most epoxies are not UV stable. Gougeon Bros. makes a special coating hardener that's more durable, but they still recommend varnish protection. Of course, that's in exterior applications, and you're talking inside and even under-deck, but I'd be inclined to use some UV-filter spar varnish anyway. It's amazing how much reflected UV you get on the water. I have a tiny summer cottage on Lake Huron's Saginaw Bay, and pictures on the wall can fade rapidly from indirect sunlight reflection. It always surprises me. Have fun. Chris Campbell
