'new' Cal 20

roaming_lawn_gnome2011-07-14 20:00
Hello. This is my first post to the group, so I will introduce myself, my name is John, I have been sailing along now for 35+ years. Started in an O'Day 10 when I was 10, moved up to a Laser 14, then went Catamarans for ten years. After that fun I owned a SanJuan 24. (Bruce Kirby design), Clarke Boat Company, that boat was FAST. Hurricane Ivan ate that one, so I got a Hunter 22, that is/was a fun Weekender, just sold it, now I have a 1979 Victoria 18, a William McVay design built in DeBarry Fl. I just went and signed papers and shook hands with the owner of a 1965 Cal 20, it will be mine next month. I am so happy that I finally got a C.W. Lapworth, Jensen Marine Cal 20! She is kinda rough in appearance, to a novice she is a wreck, I know better. I took my Rubber Mallet, walked round the hull twice, upper tap and lower taps, the vessel is solid, I did notice one soft spot on her deck, port side, looks like a simple fiberglass backfill is all that is needed. The seller has done almost all the standard work that these boats of this age require, and did it very well. That's my story, and I am sticking to it, till the next winds roar in. Salute from Choctawatchee Bay, Fort Walton Beach Fl, Harris the Narrows and points East and West. JChia

JChia, Is that how we should call you on the list? Welcome to the Cal list. Hope you enjoy your new 20. I have always wanted a Cal 20, but didn't want to change my name to Chris, but that's another story. Wilkie On Jul 14, 2011, at 1:00 PM, roaming_lawn_gnome wrote: Hello. JChia is fine, too many Johns and it starts to smell funny. She is on a newer single axle trailer, was built for the Cal 20. I am stting up scaffolding now that she will lie between so that I can address the Gelcoat and that one 'soft' spot. Why? Well, because most of us Cal 20 owners on this list have that good name. It helps to confuse our enemies. > > > I am so happy that I finally got a C.W. Lapworth, Jensen Marine Cal 20! > Congratulations for acquiring one of the sweetest little boats around. My 20 makes me smile, and that is the fundamental requirement of good boats. Cal 20s have crossed the Atlantic and single-handed to Hawaii, so if I maintain my boat and don't do something really stupid, I know she'll get me where I'm going. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy ol' /Martha C,/ 1967 Cal 20 #1220. Chris Campbell Sailing in Traverse City, MI

Not too many Twenties in Florida I recon. Ive had mine a couple of years and finally got arround to finishing her.Mounted all the hardware and now just have to set up the mast and boom.Lots of new parts, new motor, Im a bit excited. Is it true that Jenson shipped the first Twenty to Fl;orida to race on Biscayne Bay and it kicked ass? Well lil Wind Song is going back out on the Bay to represent.

I have no idea about the first twenty to Fl, sounds interesting. The one I just got battled Hurricane Ivan, the Cal 20 overcame the storm. (sorta) She did take on some water, she has sat on the hard for three or four years now, so is all dried out and ready to the Hull and Decks wet again. She has the original Cal Mast , someone added a Spar above the spreaders looks solid, may keep it that way. I still have to transport her 35 miles, I was going to motor her over, haul the mast, gear boxes and whatnot on trailer, sans the boat. I like the Chia Pet, I have been called that since those silly things were seen on TeeVee. Her name is going to follow in the normal progression, my Laser, 1973 was 'Sandy', my SanJuan was SandyI,(Sandy won) the Hunter was never christened or named by me,the Victoria 18 was never named, so this one could be 'Sandy Too, II or whatever, and the Vic could be Sandy .5. Is all fun, and that is the idea, have fun, don't worry, sea happy. JChia Now I have to research this Mainsheet setup or how I can utilize the Harken 4-1 on it. --- In Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com, GEOCOX@... wrote: > > > > > Not too many Twenties in Florida I recon.
