Slip Gouging, Blight Fright, Lying and Cheating County Supervisor-puppets
Gerald Sobel2011-07-25 02:43 UTC
Lloyd, the last time we had a recession, which was on going until mid to late 1990's the price of slips went down, but NOW they continue to go up, despite the far more dire economy. I paid $135 for my 25' slip in 1997. I currently pay $235, but if I tried to rent that slip now it would be $300 or more. Makes me wonder. The current plan is to eliminate my slip, and half the total slips in Pier 44 basin B. Meanwhile, slips in San Francisco Bay go for around $6 or so a foot in my size range. That is probably a pricier area, or certainly just every bit as pricy as the LA area.
Where are we supposed to find slips? The folks who had their slips stolen from Basin A, which you and everyone who cares must go see, to see what the county did there, %$#@^%$#!!!, ended up in LA Harbor, never to return. That's pretty strange. The reason Marina del Rey was built, was 'to get the small boats out of LA Harbor because they were interfering with shipping'. That's what 'they' said at the time. Apparently that was a lie to get the public to finance a speculators land grabb. That's fraud.
Also, the two best maintained boats on my dock are live aboards, and are two of the most used. If it were not for the live aboards on my dock we would continue to have our boats broken into and valuables stolen, as was the case when I got my slip. The Cal24-Mk2 next to my boat had all his sails stolen, and other valuable items.
The County Crossing Guards, I mean, Sheriffs, just cruise the street, or occasionally the parking area, never leaving the safety of their patrol cars. One night, a minute after one of them passed by, I went to the men's room, to find a transient passed out drunk, blocking the door. Of course, the Sheriff never noticed. I'm sure they intend to blight the place to make an excuse to 're-develop' it. If you and I can see crime on-going, eg. boaters dealing dope, strangers/non-boaters coming and going after short visits, how is it that they remain blind to it, even if called to their attention numerous times??

Jerry,
You are right on all accounts; but I just watched a movie
called "Swept Away". Political in many ways, portrayed a good example of
surviving, at least for the short term. We as sole individuals must enjoy what's
available on the short term, which means developing enough magna to counter what
looks to be inevitable. This can be done by assuring that the new sailors to MDR
experience a small bit of what we have enjoyed in the past. I don't mean the
squatters who are taking advantage of current events, I must agree with the
powers in control, tourist will not pay to see the current conditions. I do know
that the more people who enjoy what we have, then their will be more people
reluctant to letting it go.
As pleasure boaters, our task is to enhance the experience
of the newbie so he can appreciate what is being lost. Politically motivated,
I'm not, but my experience here in Carson, Ca proved to me that the efforts of
those with money can only be over come with a very large number of interested people. People become interested after they find their way
of life is being threatened. It seems to be a fact, that having a group of
interested sailors attend meetings where their voice is canned, almost before
spoken does not work. Those same people will not rise publically until a
critical mass is established. In other social efforts of this type, the church
has been instrumental in such efforts. In this case, the task falls back on us
mariners to motivate. Motivation comes from understanding of what each has to
lose. This information can come from individual experience or collected
experience of boating organizations. Has anyone, without emotional anger, ever
talked to members of their organizations about what is truly happening. Does the
members understand the current way of boating recreation is
closing?
Is it the weather that is keeping organizations from
growing or is it that nagging under current of fear spreading discontent and
frustration. Are we mariners a victim of the split and divide strategy.
Political information is needed but even to a greater degree, the Corinthian
spirit must be enhanced by more than just words.
I believe, the public (like I once did) enjoys seeing a group of yachts on the water doing more than just racing off in
the distance. The public is on the beach for entertainment, although they are
not on a yacht, it becomes their dream and as such they are as affected by what
is happening to Mdr as we sailors are.
I think it is time for another Wing-and-Wing "attack" on
Jonathans Beach. How about a 2nd Sunday Local Cruise to that area
again?

I'm thinking, what's this, he's showing off, puffing out his chest, for his magnanimity for providing one cheap shuttle van to the citizens, because he ok'd building of more private luxury condos on former public parking facilities, so people can park god knows where away from the marina, or under some high rise, and still make it here see a few yachts in the harbor?
>Grrrr! We need to demonstrate, the way my generation did against that endless war to support a corrupt government, and the way labor did at the turn of the century when it was subjected to intolerable conditions, wages, hours, and child labor (12 year olds working 12 hour shifts for peanuts). How is the next generation going to make the leap from zero to 45' yachts to be the next generation of sailors? It's not going to happen, at least, not for the middle class. How can a county that can't afford some fireworks yet afford to rip out concrete piers and rearrange the docks for the whole marina? It doesn't wash, not by a long shot. The fact that the supervisors stole the money allocated for fireworks means they'll stoop to steal anything and everything. Look at all the sneaky tricks and lies they made up to boot the Sea Scouts out of their Flagship? As far as I know, all their promises of taking it, I mean, stealing it, to give it away to
county programs to benefit inner city boating programs was just smoke and mirrors. We need to petition the FBI to investigate the whole mess. All of it is illegal, it breaks every covenant the County it swore to when it got the funding from Congress to buy the land and build the marina...that commercial development and real estate speculation would be strictly forbidden around the small boating recreation park.

It is the case of Money talks and the little guy gets walked all over.
Goverment is doing to us boaters, land owners, and our kids educations. They
are selling the slips to the people who can afford the mega yachts, because the
small boat people do not have the $$$ in the wallet to affford it. Land owners
because if a city or goverment office thinks the can get more out of it they use
the courts to take it away. Our kids because when you hear the budget is short
it seems the first dept they go after is education.

Slips today are about 10.50+ in San Pedro, for 30'. I can remember back in the 70's Newport Beach CA was about 10.00 a foot and San Pedro was about 4.50. It just depends on the perception of the area, proximity to open ocean and inflation.
Just and observation.

Politically motivated, I'm not, but my experience here in Carson, Ca proved to me that the efforts of those with money can only be over come with a very large number of interested people. People become interested after they find their way of life is being threatened. It seems to be a fact, that having a group of interested sailors attend meetings where their voice is canned, almost before spoken does not work. Those same people will not rise publically until a critical mass is established. In other social efforts of this type, the church has been instrumental in such efforts. In this case, the task falls back on us mariners to motivate. Motivation comes from understanding of what each has to lose. This information can come from individual experience or collected experience of boating organizations. Has anyone, without emotional anger, ever talked to members of their organizations about what is truly happening. Does the members understand the current way of boating recreation is closing?
Is it the weather that is keeping organizations from growing or is it that nagging under current of fear spreading discontent and frustration. Are we mariners a victim of the split and divide strategy. Political information is needed but even to a greater degree, the Corinthian spirit must be enhanced by more than just words.
I believe, the public (like I once did) enjoys seeing a group of yachts on the water doing more than just racing off in the distance. The public is on the beach for entertainment, although they are not on a yacht, it becomes their dream and as such they are as affected by what is happening to Mdr as we sailors are.
I think it is time for another Wing-and-Wing "attack" on Jonathans Beach. How about a 2nd Sunday Local Cruise to that area again?

Loyd it really got my craw, driving around the four lane Via Marina loop around the Marina last week on the way to the TNT races, as an airport type passenger van with the county seal and the label "Provided by Don Kanbe and the Los Angeles Supervisors" slipped passed me on the right as I was stuck in traffic that was stalled trying to squeeze past road work (new water main for the new condos?).
As far as I know, all their promises of taking it, I mean, stealing it, to give it away to county programs to benefit inner city boating programs was just smoke and mirrors. We need to petition the FBI to investigate the whole mess. All of it is illegal, it breaks every covenant the County it swore to when it got the funding from Congress to buy the land and build the marina...that commercial development and real estate speculation would be strictly forbidden around the small boating recreation park.

Knowing that water seeks its own level and that the service taught me to survive, will I endure this "global market"?
will those directing MDR survive? If so at what level. Is it best to have loved and lost rather not loving at all. It will all blow over - survive.
Are we as members of a club, enhancing the environment to make it pleasurable for the newbie. Are we asking the newbie to find his own slot to fade away in. It's hard to defeat a group who are all enjoying the environment. Can Knabe help with the Corinthian enlightenment? I know the weather has been of little help this year, but we as a club could make a difference. As one protects children from hostile environments, we must do similarly with newbie's.
Pleasurable events helps growth and increases the desire to survive.
As a club, VMF has always welcomed the newbie, not by scare tactics but by freely sharing information and setting up relative easy environments for learning. Can you imagine the fear generated by a severely competitive yacht on a starboard tack bearing down on a port tacker, hollering for right away.
The Corinthian spirit is not generated by showing who is the best, rather, the Corinthian spirit is enhanced by togetherness in events small or large. Yes, some times the newbie has great ideas ...

We need another Teddy, to bust the Trusts!
Jerry
"In Trusts, we don't trust". You can quote me on that. No more puppet politicians whose allegiance is to the men with the most gold. Down with Chaos and Goldfinger. Down with Knabe and his ilk of mega crooks.

Theodore Roosevelt's ideas on Immigrants and being an AMERICAN in 1907.
'In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language.. And we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.' - Theodore Roosevelt 1907
