I think most boats still use them. I used uncovered wire and my friend used Amsteel. We both like what we did more than vinyl covered. When I took off my vinyl covered lifeline, I found a place where probably every strand was rusted through but the breaks were spaced out so the line held together. I have serious doubts that it could have survived someone falling against it. Better to have something you can inspect. Amsteel at 1/4 inch is 8000 pounds compared to 3/16 wire which is under 4000 pounds strength. The Amsteel could degrade for years and years and still be stronger than the wire, which you can't even inspect. The only issue I have with the bare wire is that setting my whisker pole on the lifeline mars the pole up. If I had it to do over, I would use Amsteel. Vinyl covered stainless seemed like a step up. The boat is in fresh water, and the swaged terminals the rigger used seem to have a larger I.D at the outer end, so the vinyl cover is captured by the swage, sealing it. I assume that it's water plus anaerobic conditions that lead to crevice corrosion, so if you keep the water out, you're safe. But maybe this is all just a lot of rationalizing so I don't get obsessed over lifeline failure. Chris Campbell > >

Replace your lifelines every 7--10 years. Now amsteel is reccommended. Non the less deterioration happens at swedges and terminals. Don't have crew overboard because of lifeline failure. They are very hard to recover. WEAR YOUR HARNESS! Clip into jacklines.
