Cal 20 spinnaker
Chris Campbell2011-07-28 19:27 UTC
Cal sailors:
My friend who owns the other Cal 20 here has been trying to sell it.
The boat is on a good trailer and ought to travel well, if anybody is
close enough to NW lower Michigan to make a purchase feasible. Let me
know and I'll pass along contact info. I think his upset price is the
value of the tax deduction for donating it to the local charity boat
auction.
But my real inquiry is about spinnakers. His boat came with 3 (!)--1/2
oz., 1 oz., and 1-1/2 oz. He's offered to sell me one (or more). My
boat has spinnaker rigging but no sail or pole. Any suggestions on the
most useful sail weight? My inclination is to go light, since I often
sail single-handed and am not likely to be flying a spinnaker in a blow.
And what's a fair price? Any notions of what's fair to seller and
buyer? I don't mind fetching a bargain from a stranger but don't want
to leave a bad taste in anybody's mouth when dealing with a friend.

I have built spinnaker poles. Go light and weak-- break the pole B4 the mast. 1/2 oz AND 1 oz buy both for $150
Cal 20 spinnakers are Great Fun!!!

Chris, I would go with a 3/4 oz. for all around. It will take you from light air providing you lighten up your sheet and after guy. As the breeze fills in your can increase sheet size if needed. In San Pedro CA in the Summer time we get light air in morning and builds to about 18-24 afternoon till Sunset. The 3/4 oz. will hold up for most cituations
Prior Cal 20 x 2
Mark.

Re: [Cal_Boats] Cal 20 spinnaker

I am getting killed in our beer can races when the wind is light on the
downwind legs because we race without a spinnaker.
Anyway, and advice about a used spinnaker for my Lapworth-36. Price, size,
style, where to get it, etc. I know nothing about the basics. From what I
do know, an asymetric would be easier to sail but not solve my problem as my
boat is not fast enough to use one.
I have two spruce spinnaker poles.
Advice appreciated.
