Budgeting time
Grae Morrison2011-08-03 15:26 UTC
I'm starting to put together my wishlist (very 'wishful' if the wife
sees it!) for stuff to do during the close season, one of the major
things I want to replace is the old (failed lcd) navman wind unit, and
the broken Standard log/depth gauges.
currently looking at an ST60+ set or the tacktick T038 package or maybe
the garmin multifunction package, I know there have been some
discussions on these before but can people offer up some experience
and/or recommendations, alongside this I also want to look at mounting
the displays somewhere other than the bulkhead which seems to be best
used by the wife/kids as a backrest whilst out cruising (complete
obscuring any instruments)- I've seen them placed on the companion way
cover and also at the helm any thoughts or suggestions?
Cheers,

Grae,
Only a personal preference & looking toward future technology. Before you decide consider NMEA 2000 compatibility. With that, you can mix & match manufacturers products.

Michael

I like the bulkhead....tried a nab-pod mounted to the pedestal guard; however, shorthanded, if I'm in front of the pedestal, working the sheets, etc I find the bulkhead location a spot where I can still see all of the instruments. With my auto-pilot, I can make course corrections from that location as well....
There is also the short run from the instruments back to the control pack with easy access from the cabin to trouble shoot because they are bulkhead mounted and accessible from inside where it's dry for the most part.
I mounted them up as High as I could in order to still have a location for folks to sit. There is an issue of people sitting in front of the instruments at times. Just my two cents regarding location.
I'll try to put a photo in to my photo album...first page S/V Thalia 2-29.

Thanks Michael - have to admit, that's what draws me to the garmin option.

RE: [Cal_Boats] Budgeting time (Grae) NMEA 2000 one opinion.
ti… [at] ch2m.com2011-08-03 16:50 UTC
I love Garmin.
BUT
NEMA 2000 was a very bad choice to standardize on for sea going yachts IMHO
When I first beta tested NEMA 2000 for a leading manufacturer, I was shocked how terrible this standard is for survivability and installation.
Premade connectors are required, end terminals, tees, separate power cabling, so many points of clutter and failure.
[cid:image002.jpg@01CC51C2.C75DCBA0]
Each connector is a multiple failure point. When I had Seatalk, connected similarly, it failed constantly.
Connecting NEMA 2000 to a laptop to run charting is currently problematic… not impossible… but quite difficult.
A NMEA 2000 converter is now available $300-400… NMEA 0183 to laptop converter is not required (serial or $35 Serial/USB converter)
Dittos connecting to many mainstream systems or multiple systems.
I guess I’m a curmudgeon, but I will never have 2000 on one of my boats, and cannot recommend it to others.
NEMA 0183 and its ability to mix and match components works on California Girl and Freewind – now and for the next many years
[cid:image004.jpg@01CC51C2.C75DCBA0]
I have connected via NMEA 0183
Auto Pilot
VHF Radio
AIS
Windows 7 Laptop
SCS Demodulator
ICOM 700pro SSB
Nexus Instruments
ACR GPS EPIRB
Garmin GPS
Garmin displays (NMEA 2000 side disabled)

I am a TackTick fan, I am a TackTick customer, and I am a TackTick dealer (in the interest of full disclosure). But I rep all other brands as well so my choice is based on price, performance, and simplicity.
I have TackTick on my boat and love it. It is much easier to install and has never failed to operate. The T038 is a good package unless you are a die hard racer. I opted for this system because my instruments are mounted in the cockpit, on the aft facing bulkhead, under a hard t-top, and would get no sun. The system draws so little power that I could leave it on for a month and the house bank would hardly feel it. I too have the problem of crew getting in front of the instruments but solved that by getting a TackTick Remote unit that is solar powered, hand held or mountable, on a lanyard so you can put it around your neck, and shows all the data available from the other instruments and more. That means you can take it down to the nav station and still have all the information available to you. You can also have it on the bow while getting ready to drop the hook and know exactly what the depth gauge is reading. It is a very handy item.
I have interfaced my TackTick system to my Standard Horizon Chartplotter and Radar system so radar overlays the chart. Getting it to work was childishly simple. Integration is a breeze with TackTick and their are no proprietary connectors.
My opinion is that one shouldn't use the NMEA 0183 vs. 2000 to make an electronics decision today. Both standards will be around for the foreseeable future and simple devices are available that can translate in either direction.
Anyway, that's my opinion.

I also use tacktick. I had nothing. Just A handheld GPS and a wind vane top of the mast.
I only had one problem so far. Isent them a picture from phone and they sent me a new part over night from UK.
I plan to link things together, chart plotter. Auto pilot. But only have handheld GPS still.
A lot of it is still new to me. I actually sailed slower in the beginning. But only look at the speed log now to figure what else I am not doing.
I do think we have problems during our foggy overcast socal summer days. Sometimes my anometer does not talk to instruments. But whitecaps are whitecaps and when you are sailing on your ear. It's time to shift gears. Or vice versa.

just realized we never had that problem of bulkhead backrest because our
traveler on the 29 Noah's Kid is about 4 inches from the bulkhead. If your
traveler's not there, maybe a built-out box right under the companionway door
between the seats but up to the wood trim so no-one trips over the new extension
and you could add a removable plexiglass or lexan weather or non-glare shield to
protect from being kicked. Not sure if being that close to the engine
compartment is relevant. Helen
