CCCCC at the Channel Islands?

Gerald Sobel2011-08-12 01:52 UTC
I'm contemplating cruising out to the Channel Islands this weekend...unless a firm date or semi firm date has been set for a get together there, as we discussed having one in mid September. My convoy to Catalina, planned for this weekend, has been postponed two weeks. Any recommendations as to an ideal place to stop in Channel Islands? I could go during the week if weekends are typically crowded to the point where it is difficult to find a good place to anchor. I've heard Prisoner's cove mentioned. Is it also a good idea to tackle Annacappa before going to Santa Cruz Island? Gosh, the summer is whizzing by quickly. Jerry Cal 24 Shpritz.

I will be leading a group of boats on a cruise to the Channel Islands beginning Sept 5th (Labor Day) at Pelican Cove on Santa Cruz Island. We will spend a couple of days there hiking and visiting Painted Cave. On Thursday we plan to go to Cuyler Harbor on San Miguel Island to watch the re-enactment of Cabrillo's landing on the Saturday after Labor Day. Boats are arriving using different paths but at least two boats are going from San Pedro to Paradise Cove (Malibu) on Friday, Ventura Harbor on Saturday, Santa Barbara Harbor on Sunday, and leave from there on Monday for Pelican.

Jeff, Sounds super, if I can talk myself out of doing our annual Outlaw Regatta on that weekend. That is from MdR to Seal Beach via Hurricane Gulch; slips provided at Seal Beach Y.C. (we had, untill two years ago, a live band and D.J. for the event. Sadly, the Regattas are going down hill. Our Channel Islands to MdR was nixed this year because of declining attendance and lack of effort on CHIslY.C., who staged another simultaneous regatta the same weekend.. This year I missed Redondo Bch's Queen Mary Regatta and a similar one put on by the San Fernando Y.C. that would have overnighted in San Pedro. Were any other member of Cal Boats going on your cruise? Are we still on for a Channel Islands CCCCC later in the merry month of Sept. I also have to figure when my oldest brother is flying out to meet my Mom and older bro in Los Altos Hills that weekend. Oye, life is complicted. I have Brian's book and coastal charts. I almost moved to S.B. and worked on Brian's solar hot water and spa heaters in 1978; he lives up on Avenida de las Pulgas and is a professor in Anthropology at UCSB, heck of a nice guy! The book is either in my bedroom somewhere, or on my boat. Is it true, that Pelican Cove is better than Pelican Bay as a place to relax? I've heard long term rates are reasonable at the latter, but the food (baloney sandwiches on white bread) aint so hot, not up to Cruise Ship standards. I much prefer whole wheat, peanut butter and jelly with salami, myself. Maybe I should check the rates with Carnival Cruise lines instead/Travelzoo, good food and entertainment, altho I've done their 3 day cruise twice now, the last in near hurricane/super Santana conditions (no competition at the midnight buffet for seconds that night, most people cabin bound and vomiting their guts out...sand crabs!)
