Transmission problems
John Boyce2011-08-25 21:02 UTC
I have a Cal2-27 from 1980 equipped with an 11 hp universal engine.
Recently I have experienced my transmission slipping at low speed. The
first time I thought it was an out of adjustment linkage, but I have ruled
that out. Does anyone know if there are any adjustments to this transmission
or am I looking at an expensive rebuild.
Thanks

What kind of transmission is it? I have recently had to replace my Hurth
transmission in my Cal29. It was expensive but I feel much more confident in
tricky situations.

I believe it is a hurth transmission. Until now I have had no problems with
it.

Many Hurths, Kanzakis, & ZFs are known in the trade as $1.00 an hour gears. They last a little over 1,000 hours and cost a little over $1,000.
Check Dr. Diesel on Foleyengines.com.
Disconnect your shift linkage cable, start the engine and shift using the lever on the gear. If it shifts okay, then the problem is with the cable $100 or less. If it does not shift into forward and reverse, then prepare to pay $$$$. One thousand hours is more than ten years given the normal usage stats. Sail more, power less or buy a boat with a Borg Warner gear.
YMMV.

Who can quarrel with sail more and power less? But there is another
option, which is to buy an outboard.

Your transmission needs rebuilding. It is a Hurth HBW 50, 2:1 ratio.
We suggest that instead of rebuilding that old Hurth transmission, you
replace it with a Twin Disc. This unit has a simple cone clutch, unlike
the multi disc clutches of the Hurth. This makes them simple, and robust
transmissions. They are rated for 30 horsepower , so it is way
overbuilt for your 11hp engine.
The new transmission is a direct replacement for the old Hurth. Just
remove your engine's bellhousing, then the Hurth, and install the Twin
Disc.
We suggest you also replace the drive plate it this time, and check all
flexible engine mounts for condition. If they are collapsed, engine
alignment is impossible.
Please contact me off list for details and pricing.
