OK here is the question ..we are upgrading our winches from 2 speed 21(barett)
to 2 speed 25s ... is there any reason NOT to have 2 speed secondary winches?
the secondary winches NOW are old flat handled single speed ..also have single
speed (barett) 20s avil....thanks edward (helen)

A couple questions, Folks.
Do you fly a chute a lot? Having quickly removable handles is a plus in addition to leverage.
How strong are you?
Cheers
Charlie

IMHO any boat that you cannot pull the lines in by hand, say over 24' then a two speed would be desired.
I recently got 2 used (rebuilt like new) Self Tailing Barlow Aluminum #25's from ARCO in Australia for $600.

I've sailed on a Ranger 23, and the single speed winches with short cranks were a bitch to sheet in the full sized Genoa, which is a mast head sail way bigger than any foresail I carry on my Cal24-I. I've suggested getting cranks with a longer radius, but two speed self tailers would be nice. My friend Dario has such winches on his Dolphin 24 and he adores them, and thinks I'm nuts with my 2-3 humping-grunting crew power drive, but with just one complete wrap around my super deluxe counter rotating phenolics, we sure get the sheets in FAST! I cleat the sheets to cam cleats mounted vertically just below the lip of my cockpit seats.
