Newbe seeking clarification
Christopher2011-09-07 15:36
Hello everyone,
I just joined the group and I'm seeking some clarification on the difference between the Cal Cruising 36 and the Cal Lapworth 35? I currently sail and old Tartan but my girl and I are looking to moving up. I've been looking at a raised salon Cal that comes up in places as a Lapworth 35 / Cal Cruising 35 and now I see on this site "SOGNAR" as a Cal Cruising 36? Some have the dinette version but the one I'm looking at has a step down to a more traditional settee version? I'm totally confused. I thought if there ever was a group that could help, this would be the place.
I apologize if I'm asking a question that has been beaten to death...as they are on the Tartan forum sometimes. Be gentle! And thanks in advance.
Chris

Hi Chris,
We sail Sara E, a Cal Cruising 36 built in 1969. The Cal 36 and the Cal Cruising 36 share the same hull molding, very similar to a scaled-down Cal 40, with trapezoidal fin keel (longish by today's standards) and spade rudder. The Cal 36 has a traditional deck molding and accomodations with centerline dropleaf table, also inboard shrouds, and was intended as a club and possibly offshore racer. The Cruising has a wider coachroof ending in a doghouse or deck saloon, enclosing a raised dinette to port and linear galley to starboard, sitting on top of an 85 gal fuel tank. The shrouds are outboard, right at the toerail, so you can't get the tight sheeting angles possible with the standard Cal 36. I've read that the Cal 36 was quite competitive in its day, and people still race them (as is the case with the much better-known 40). We are very pleased with our Cruising Cal 36 - we live aboard all summer and cruise in the San Juan and Gulf Islands in the Pacific
Northwest. She is a comfortable Good Old Boat and a good sailor. We've put a lot of effort, time and money into upgrading her over the last six years, and will continue to do so. The 36's were built between 1966 and 1971, if memory serves.
The Cal Cruising 35 was a follow-on model, started when the production run for the 36 ended. It seems to represent the next stage in Lapworth's thinking.
The Lapworth 36 is a wooden boat - I've seen a quote that it was Lapworth's all-time favorite - with a cutaway full keel and attached rudder, rather than the trapezoidal fin and spade rudder of the 36's and 40. I'm not sure of its dates, but certainly earlier than the fiberglass series.
I hope that helps a bit. Have fun looking!

Bill and Lene~
Thanks for the great breakdown... It totally makes sense now.
Everyone... thanks for the kind words. I look forward to learning a lot more about these great boats. I sail an old Tartan and the Tartan forum has been an incredible asset to the owners and when I did a complete re-fit on her, the back and forth with folks who had already done the jobs or were also in the middle of one, was invaluable.
I'm hoping to schedule a time to head out there and look at the boat sometime in the next month. Much appreciated.
Chris.
