Try a Recreation Vehicle store for the butyl tape. I bought some this spring for bedding 2 small hatches. Bert Pesak

http://www.pbase.com/mainecruising/butyl_tape I just bought a couple rolls to seal hardware to deck. That site also double's as a great howto/reference site. Lots of great, wall thought out pictures illustrating his points (he being MainSail from the forums) On Tue, Sep 6, 2011 at 7:22 AM, Bert Pesak <bj… [at] gmail.com> wrote: > ** > > > Try a Recreation Vehicle store for the butyl tape. I notice this tape is ½” wide. Is it suitable for bedding things like stanchions? If so, how do you do it, and has anyone had experience using it. Life expectancy? Look here http://forums.sbo.sailboatowners.com/showthread.php?p=705340#post705340 I sure hope this guy knows what he's talking about. This stuff looks like a great solution if it is all he says. Here is a "companion" site that gives the pros & cons of Butyl Tape. Looks like the downside is its sensitivity to chemicals. http://blog.dankim.com/2009/04/24/marine-sealants/ After reading all this stuff it looks like its butyl and polysulfide for general sealing tasks and 5200 for things you absolutely, positively never want to get apart again. > >

A good rule of thumb is to never use 5200 for anything on a boat. If you want to make a permanent bond, use West System. I use Silkaflex 291 LOT that I get from http://www.lfsmarineoutdoor.com/ for about $13. If you cork the end of the tube with a metal or wood dowell and clamp the cork with a hose clamp and apply pressure with the calking gun it will keep air out and an opened tub will last months. This trick will not work with 4200. But just remember this -- never use 5200 for anything. I used it to hold the tile soap holder in my shower. I have seen it used to hold a windshield on a car. Just don't use it on your boat. Allen On Thu, Sep 8, 2011 at 8:51 AM, Wayne Gillikin <wa… [at] yahoo.com>wrote: > ** > > > Here is a "companion" site that gives the pros & cons of Butyl Tape. I just bedded a teak stopper bank and winch standoff. Laid down strips next to each other- the strips have some thickness and when you tighten the blocks down, most squeeze out and the material that doesn't, fills in the gaps. Make sure to oversize the holes, fill with epoxy, after cure, drill new holes to size, countersink those holes to create a place for the butyl tape to create a nice gasket. Theirs a great write up on that site about how to do all this. On Wed, Sep 7, 2011 at 7:39 PM, Harleigh Ewell <hp… [at] hpewell.com> wrote: > ** > > > I notice this tape is ½” wide.
