I don't know if any of you guys remember, but there was a boat a few years
ago that was designed by Bob Perry that was built to be able to be shipped
in a container. Bob is a friend of a friend and I was asking him about the
Cal 39 before I bought it and out of curiosity I asked him about this
"container" boat. He said it was definitely not his idea but was asked to design
it, so he did for a nice fee I am certain. I went aboard it at the Annapolis
Boat Show and it was quite roomy below actually, but just didn't feel right
as it was so far from the norm. I am quite sure the idea never took off.

Paul,
That concept became the Flying Tiger. It was designed to fit into a container. They are made in China,(duh!), and we have some here in Chicago. I think they are classified as sport boats. I don't know who actually designed it, but ask the internet.

The Flying Tiger, designed by Bob Perry, does ship in a container but it's a
32ft sport boat.
The boat Paul is referring to (also designed by Bob Perry around the time
the Flying Tiger came out) is this one:

It was a motorsailer that could be reasonably easily shipped around the
world in a standard 40' container when you had the itch to sail somewhere
else far from where you were :)

Jensen told Griffith he had to guarantee ten boats before he would
make the plug and build the mold. Griffith got ten people to sign up
and a year later, they were building Cal 40s with three molds as fast
as they could turn them out. There were eventually 177 of them. About
150 are still sailing.
The concept was the spade rudder and fin keel, plus light and fast.
George had a Lapworth 36 but inside it was too small for his family.
