InJuly of 1991, We sailed a race that went under the Richmond San Rafael bridge. I believed we could pass under the span. I was wrong. we came up when we lost the wind and the masthead collided with the roadbed. We got off with some riteous damage to our topsides and damage to our mast. I told the skipper, "Do you want me to take down the headsail?" No. When we reached the Richmond YC dock I saw that the masthead had been split from the spar. Jim Belland knew that we had damage aloft. Had we dropped the jib we would have lost the mast.
Jim rewelded the masthead from another spar. Be careful!

Hi folks,
I just found this video of a boat getting her 80' mast under a 65'
bridge. It was quite interesting! Enjoy!
