[image: Papoose.jpg]Papoose out in front heading to the first mark. By the way, Papoose took first for the season. The second place boat was a T-10 which is the dark hull boat. The light hull boat on starboard tack is a C&C-41 which took 3rd for the season. Papoose carries a handicap of 150, the T-10 128 and the C&C 75. This picture is a nice example of a strategy we learned this season. Starting near the pin away from all the other boats gave us the advantage of clear air. It did put us on port tack approaching the fleet coming in on starboard to the first mark. The first leg is short but we are fast enough to get in front of most of the boats. The idea is to go ahead and tack on the layline and not wait for the other boats to tack. This might put us on a collision course but they must hold their course or tack early. We don't have the right of way but that puts us in a controlling position. In this example, we tacked on the lay line and had to duck the T-10 but now we are inside for the starboard rounding. We threaded between the T-10 and the C&C-41 so luckily did not have to duck both. The T-10 could have tacked quicker after we cleared them and covered us but they thought we were going to miss the mark, but we didn't. Either way, we are the inside boat at the mark and they have to give us room. Fun stuff, Allen

Thanks, Timm. I am late reading your comment but appreciate them. I have been repairing hull cracks and painting. BTW, I am still working on that article on polars. It was much more difficult than I imagined so at this point just hope to have it done by next season. Your help on that was invaluable.
