SF Bay winter racers need crew?
Allen Edwards2011-10-05 17:31 UTC
The next step for Papoose is to fly a spinnaker but I don't know how to do
that. I have read what I can find and watched some videos and a couple of
instructions DVDs. I have also been told that I need to get on a race boat
and see how it is done, that there is no substitute for this.
I had two spinnakers. My friend said he would take me out on his boat and
he would show me how it is done. Now I have one spinnaker. Not how it is
done apparently.
Here is my spinnaker on his boat (this is the sail that survived)
http://youtu.be/2-uXcxtxscI
What I am looking for is to crew with someone this winter in SF Bay that
flys a spinnaker.
I think everyone knows that Papoose is a Lapworth-36 and that we won both
the Master Mariners (L-36 division) and the Sierra Point Yacht Club Tuesday
night series for the last two years. I am willing to man any position
including ballast. I have had her since 1989.
Any ideas how I can do this?

Allen,
Although I'm not a member, the folks at the Coyote Pt YC are really friendly and they definitely have spinnaker class races. I'd suggest visiting during happy hour on a Fri or Sat or contacting their race director to find a ride.
I've also noticed that the South Bay racing is consistently turning out 10-15 boats with spinnakers so SYC in Redwood City might be another option.
As you've probably know, this is the perfect time of year to start learning spinnaker sailing with our winds backing down. The weather for Fleet Week is looking outstanding. I may have to check it out and endure the washing maching of wakes....

Hay Allen,
I have been thinking of sailing the GGYC, The BYC and the CYC mids on Yellow Jack USA 57313. Now in 8th place overall in the SSS singlehanded div. I sail alone with the spinnaker. Lets talk! I know you are committed to excellence and demand adequate performance from your crew(reason I sail alone).

Allen, Wednesday night is beer cans at Sequoia YC in Redwood City...go and get on a boat there (except I suggest not on yellow brick road), they welcome sailors for crew (if they race tonight) and each boat gets extra credits for "pick-ups". Helen (we won't be there as nothing we have is fully raceable right this week).

Hi Mike,
Are you thinking of sailing with a crew or continuing your singlehanded
sailing? Where is Yellow Jack.

I sail doublehanded also. Yellow Jack lives on a trailer at the Treasure Island Sailing Center.

I think I have found a ride thanks to this list and specifically Dyer, who
made the suggestion off list. One of the boats in my marina, a Tartan-10,
practices every Thursday and races every other Saturday. He just agreed to
take me on as crew. It is close, includes non racing practice, and fits my
schedule well. Thanks again to everyone who made offers and suggestions, I
am sure I will have more questions as I get further into this.
The only downside is that he does end for end gybes and I have been told I
should do dip pole gybes. Not sure that is true, but that may be an issue
down the road.

Good Allen!
Dip pole and end for end are just 2 sides of the same coin. The thing you want to see is trim and usage. There are lots of different ways to skin the cat.
End for end is simpler on a smaller boat. Dip pole requires a sheet and a guy (4 lines) attached to the clews. It's also necessary to teach the crew when to change over from sheet to guy. A mast man needs to raise the pole on the mast and you will need crew on the pole topping lift also to drop the pole to swing thru the triangle. We raced my 7 ton Pilot 35 with 8 on bay races with the spinnaker. I went from end to end to DP and in heavier air that was OK. In lighter air 15k- I think end for end was better. I changed my pole to auto trip so when the guy went into the jaws the pole closed. When in doubt---don't set. Belly button takedown lines and socks add more complication. Offshore I use a spinnaker net that prevents the sail from winding around the stay. I do not need it on the bay. Mistakes are part of the process. When you go trawling with the sail under the keel it's nice to have a spinnaker the same color as your
bottom paint. I have done better in races when my competition set and I did not. When they crashed and burned or sailed real low I went for the mark. Do well in the Jessica Cup! Spinnakers are expendable. You can buy more at sail brokers and Craigslist!!!
My Best, Mike
