Offer: Free to Cal Boat Listee - My Cal 28 - Must Take Over Slip NOW - or move
We The People2011-10-05 20:14
Dear Cal Boat Listees,
I am going through a divorce and need to trim off the excess expenses. I am offering FREE to Cal Boat listees my Cal 28, located at the Chula Vista Marina, in Chula Vista, San Diego County, CA.
All I ask is that you take over the October 2011 marina fee NOW!
I cannot accommodate any joint visits to see the boat. It is in San Diego, and I am stuck in Phoenix with a hectic trial schedule and a pending divorce.
Let me know. I do not wish to see her shredded.

Hi Bruce,
I'm sorry to hear of your divorce issues. I would be glad to take owernership of the boat, except for the fact I'm in Rhode Island! and my Cal 2o would be jealous...
Best Wishes,
Chris Barszcz

Bruce,
That is such a shame to hear.
Are you sure you are not offering up my boat? I have the very same boat, in
the very same marina. Which slip are you?
Perhaps I will have to be like Chris. I know that he really enjoys saying to
other the other listees, "my *other *boat"

Please remember that I am "bicoastal." No, not flying from MY to LA
every week, but (better still, in my view) enjoying boats on both the
Lake Michigan and Lake Huron sides. Life is good. And the other boat,
while old and slow, is pretty and well-loved.

I am on F Dock, slip 227. I haven't been sailing in more than two years
now. I am sure she can use a wash. About six months ago, I stopped the
monthly bottom dive, too.
Here is a photo of the marina showing the location of my Cal 28. She is
marked by the red line.

Gosh, Bruce! Sad to hear this turn of events. Me first matie and I are scratching out heads wondering how we can help you out.

PS. We had two woop-ass races on Sunday (reminded me of the Marx Bros. "A day at the Races", where one thing after another went wrong yet we kept on surging along and catching up to the fleet) and on Tuesday evening, which was in winds gusting up to 20 MPH. Succeeding in snapping the pin out of my whiskey pole as we daringly went wing and wing on a roller coaster ride surfing down waves. Am wondering if I can stick a piece of hardwood dowel in there to replace it, as those fittings cost an arm and a leg, even tho is was one of them cheapie 1" Harken sturdy carbon reinforced laminated chicken fat (plastic) ones. They make jetliners out of that stuff, don't they?

Long time lurker here. I tired of having my postings disappear so
have been quiet for a long time. You have/had my cal 34 manual on
your website.
Sorry to hear of your pending divorce. Been there and it is not fun.
I still have my 34 but my brother has been looking for a boat. He
lives on Whidbey Island and is now retired. The boat would be moved
there whenever possible.
I understand you have not seen her but what is the general
condition? Sailable? What are the slip fees? I could assume the fees
immediately.
Thanks for your time.

Thanks for all who responded. There are several parties interested in San
Diego, one in SF, another in Arizona, and others who have written.
I always considered my boat sailable and sailed her every time I went to San
Diego. The last time I went for a quick visit I found a leak in the
outboard gas line that kept me from going out. I went to the marina store
and bought a new line and spent some time working on it. The first line I
eyeballed and bought the wrong size. Bought a second line, again, just
eyeballing. This one fit the motor but would not pass through the hole in
the transom into the fuel storage compartment. Then the sun went down, so I
loaded up and returned to Phoenix. I went back last October for a law
school reunion with a couple of landlubbing lawyers, who just wanted to
drink beer on deck.
So she has not actually sailed in some time, but she is certainly sailable.
She is obviously not up to some of the standards of the Cal 40 types, and
the Jensen Marine ex-employees. But I loved her all the same. My web site
isn't going anywhere.
I bought a new main sail at Vinney's, or whatever the place is named in LA.
The sail was not made for a Cal. It needs to have the hanks sewn on to
match my mast. There are several sails on board, and I have the main sail
mentioned upstairs. I also have the cabin table here, which I was going to
redo in mahogany. Never got there.
We sailed her to San Diego from Oceanside with no mechanical problems or
sail problems. There are two large genoas, one has a tear in it. I dreamed
once of all new sails, but never happened. Storm jib, two mains, etc., and
a 9.9 Nissan two stroke. Three removeable gas tanks onboard. Radio,
compass, refrigerator, microwave.
Needs a head tank. I had plans to copy Mariposa's set up.
There is a stereo, two wet suits, and other personal items onboard that I
would still like to keep.
I will keep the group posted later today of developments. Someone should be
checking her out now and calling me soon.
Thanks,

Dear Bruce
I just wanted to say what a generous offer you have presented to this group. I purchased my first sailboat, a Cal 25, out of Michigan for very little $ through angel boat on eBay. The boat had been out for a couple of years and the former owner told me he just wanted to see the vessel go to a good home with someone who would use and appreciate her. Had it not been for the low initial investment I would have never been able to afford her. I spent a lot of time fixing her up and even had a few setbacks. Fortunately there is this blog and the people here helped me and eventually supplied me with a replacement for a lost mainsail which I otherwise could not afford. The best way I know to salute such generosity is to use my new (old) sailboat with my wife, six year old, friends and family as much as possible. My boat will be the last out this season and the first in next spring. I hope you find success as you move through this chapter in your life and find the right person to care for and love your vessel as much as you once did.
Yours truly,
Mark Cosens,

I just called the marina office and they said the monthly slip rental is $340.00. Here is the marina web site. Turn down your speakers!
http://www.cvmarina.com/
The guy who was going to call this morning has not called. Or if he did, I missed him. I am still in the federal courthouse in Phoenix in between hearings. I expect others later this evening once I leave here.
Photos of the boat on my web site:
http://www.stirlinglaw.com/cal28/cal28photos/
Still not a done deal, so if interested, keep calling and/or sending emails. I have a few now to contact again.
The guy dove the boat for $40 per month. If I lived there, I would have done it myself for fun.
Boat interior few years ago. Pretty much same, unless something happened while I have been in AZ.
http://www.stirlinglaw.com/cal28/cal28interior/inside.htm
Sorry for the timing. I noticed another member selling a Cal 28. His is probably in better shape than mine. Remember, my photos are a couple of years old, if not older.

Re: [Cal_Boats] Offer: Free to Cal Boat Listee - My Cal 28 - Must Take Over Slip NOW - or move
Walter2011-10-08 16:51 UTC
I inquired about the boat for my brother. He is retired from civil
service but says he cannot afford a free boat: State taxes (you have
to pay what the state thinks it is worth) transportation then slip
fees.
f it were larger I would be tempted to keep it there for a condo.
But the offer is appreciated anyway.
Thanks,

I always
considered my boat sailable and sailed her every time
I went to San Diego. The last time I went for a quick
visit I found a leak in the outboard gas line that
kept me from going out. I went to the marina store
and bought a new line and spent some time working on
it. The first line I eyeballed and bought the wrong
size. Bought a second line, again, just eyeballing.
This one fit the motor but would not pass through the
hole in the transom into the fuel storage compartment.
Then the sun went down, so I loaded up and returned
to Phoenix. I went back last October for a law school
reunion with a couple of landlubbing lawyers, who just
wanted to drink beer on deck.
So she has
not actually sailed in some time, but she is certainly
sailable. She is obviously not up to some of the
standards of the Cal 40 types, and the Jensen Marine
ex-employees. But I loved her all the same. My web
site isn't going anywhere.
I bought a
new main sail at Vinney's, or whatever the place is
named in LA. The sail was not made for a Cal. It
needs to have the hanks sewn on to match my mast.
There are several sails on board, and I have the main
sail mentioned upstairs. I also have the cabin table
here, which I was going to redo in mahogany. Never
got there.
We sailed
her to San Diego from Oceanside with no mechanical
problems or sail problems. There are two large
genoas, one has a tear in it. I dreamed once of all
new sails, but never happened. Storm jib, two mains,
etc., and a 9.9 Nissan two stroke. Three removeable
gas tanks onboard. Radio, compass, refrigerator,
microwave.
Needs a head
tank. I had plans to copy Mariposa's set up.
There is a
stereo, two wet suits, and other personal items
onboard that I would still like to keep.
I will keep
the group posted later today of developments. Someone
should be checking her out now and calling me soon.
Thanks,
Bruce

I still have my 34 but my brother has been looking
for a boat. He lives on Whidbey Island and is now
retired. The boat would be moved there whenever
possible.
I understand you have not seen her but what is the
general condition? Sailable? What are the slip fees?
I could assume the fees immediately.
Thanks for your time.

Columbus Day Regatta
Michael D2011-10-11 15:30 UTC
All,
Magic raced the Columbus Day Regatta on Biscayne Bay in Miami last weekend.
Saturday's weather was brutal with true winds to 40 kts. Two boats were struck by lightning. Lots of sails damaged or destroyed along with other hardware. No injuries from what I know. For a while, we sailed in survival mode under main only wind and rain so hard that the drops stung my face.
Sunday was gorgeous... a Chamber of Commerce type of day, although we ended up with a small tear in our 155.

Funny you should say, Michael. For the Good Old Boat Regatta in Annapolis on that Saturday here the reading from Thomas Point Lighthouse (near our race course) at 1PM.
Wind Speed (WSPD): 0 kts
Wind Gust (GST): 1 kts
Oh, well. A great day to be outside, but not good for sailing or flying kites. We both could have used the average of the conditions.
Take Care
Charlie

Great pictures on Flickr. You all violated my lightning safety rule which
is stay in the slip when there is lightning but I guess you guys have so
much of it you need more sophisticated ways of dealing with it.
I have two questions:
1) What happened to the boats that were hit by lightning?
2) Why were so many boats flying a red flag? Is that a protest flag ?

Re: [Cal_Boats] Columbus Day Regatta (Allen)

Allen,
Both boats lost their electronics. Unconfirmed, but I think a third boat also lost their wind indicator at the masthead from being too close to the lightning strike.
The red Columbus Day Regatta flags were flown per the sailing instructions to identify racers from other non-racing sailboats on the water during the race.
