Folks,
I just took up John (Roaming Gnome) on the free Cal-20 to save it from a
towing company's crusher. She was towed there after the bow support brace
buckled during braking and the boat shifted forward on her trailer. As it was
near the entrance to a bridge, the tow company on rotation was called to
move it before John was able to get it done. As I am traveling, it was a
hassle coordinating the flatbed trailer (Thanks, Bayou Support Group!) but we
got it done. It was only a 34 mile trip. It should have been uneventful,
but
some lady ran a red light and T-boned the truck. The boat shifted in its
already precarious bunks and split her port side of the hull. Damn! Now I
have more work to do. (I haven't yet been able to find out if she had
insurance or not).
I am including some pics of my new restoration project. She had been
stripped of all hardware and was in the process of being sanded before she ran
into her original transportation troubles, so don't be too judgmental. John
is also giving me all the hardware, rigging, sails etc. so it won't hurt
too bad on the pocketbook. I'll make her pretty.
My girl, Beth, has asked me what to name her. I am toying with either
Banshee or, in a nod to my fellow Cal20 owners, Chrissy. I'll let the boat tell
me what her name is before I make up my mind.
Cheers to all and I'll keep you posted on how things fare...
