Mike,
I do not remember the size of the prop.
When I called Campbell the owner had the same engine in his boat so he gave
me the same prop. He asked me for the largest diameter that would be
possible to use. The boat was in th water at the time so I ended up with a
14" dia. I think. My boat is out of the water in CT and I am in CO. If can
wait for about 2 weeks I will be back in CT and can go to the boat and get
the specs and send them to you.

there is a possibility that the place it is stored can go over and read the stamp on the side of the prop that goes over the shaft, if it is still visible? Helen

thanks for the replies. If you can find the size of yours Bert that would be great.
Gary
P.S. I am looking to get a used prop, and would not want to waste anyone's time, but thanks anyways Joe.

Mike,
The following are emails I received from Bob Virgalla an HBC club member
about my Campbell prop.
Bert
I'll check it out next time I'm at the club and email same to you The dia
and pitch should be stamped on the prop hub.
Enjoy CO.
Bob Virgalla
Bert
A beautiful morning here at HBC.
Info on your prop:
D13 RH P9
Campbell Sailor
# (p/n?) S20805
Bob Virgalla
Bert
You have 2 1/8" prop clearance to the hull. Measured from the tip of the
prop blade to the nearest point on the hull.

Thanks Bert and Bob!
This should save me some research.
Bert, where do you sail?
Best,

Bert,
Not sure if this matters......
My stock two blade prop is a 16X12X1 LH. I know little about props...but....why would you change the rotation when switching to a three-bladed prop? BTW....my measurement applies to my stock motor: Westerbeke 30 (4-91). Do you have the same motor?

Mike,
I have a Yanmar 2gm20f,which is only rated at 16 hp. My CAL 28-2 is 28 ft,
7800 lbs.
The transmission in forward reverses the rotation of the prop shaft from the
engine rotation.
If you are considering the Campbell Sailor prop, I would give them a call
and give him your current prop & engine & boat info and he should be able to
give you the proper size Campbell Sailor prop. I would do this even if I
did not plan on buying one at this time.

Hi Bert and Gary,
Bert, I think the last message in the thread meant to be directed to Gary who has the westerbeke that was standard on early (pre-'88) 28-2 models. I have the same 2gm20f that you have in my '88 but will confirm the specs with cambell before I order anything.
If my memory serves me correctly... the standard engine on earlier 28-2s was a smaller Westerbeke that produced 12-13 HP. By the middle of the run the 16HP Yanmar was an option and the later models (88-89) the Yanmar was standard equipment.
Did you sail your boat prior to the delivery with the new prop? If so, how noticeable was the sailing performance difference between the 2 blade and 3?
thanks again!
Mike

Re: [Cal_Boats] Re: Cal 34 three bladed prop?

Mike,
Your right, the last message should have been addressed to to Gary.
I did some motoring with the original folder prop that was on the boat and
did not like the reverse performance.
I did not do any significant sailing with the boat all the way up the ICW
as most of it is too narrow or the wind was from the wrong direction, which
is usually the case when your trying to get to a specific place.
The blades on the Campbell Sailor prop are very narrow in comparison to a
typical prop. It is the unique cupping on the blades that makes them as
effective as they are.
There may be another factor in the good reverse control. The thrust angle
of the prop shaft appears to be less in the CAL 28-2 than in other boats.
The prop airplane people could explain this better than me.
Hope this helps.
Bert
