BC - Original Cal Listee - 8 bells

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but Brian Cleverly (BC) died today after a fall from the mast his life support was turned a couple of days ago.
Brian was just completing an immaculate 6 year bottoms up restoration of his beloved Fuji 32. She launched just a few weeks ago. Brian was a Master Builder and documented his journey on his web site. The level of his skill and perfection was well beyond any I have ever met. If you visit his site you'll understand.

With a tear in my eye, fair voyage Brian, I'll see in at the next port.

How sad. I did a restoration on the topsides of my Cal 39 five years ago
and I never would have gotten through the project without Brian's
assistance. His knowledge of restoration techniques (and the quality of
his personal work) was unbelievable. Aren't very many craftsmen like him
anymore - now there's one less.

Timm,
Thanks for posting this, Brian was a friend to everyone on the list and was always willing to help, offer advise and guidance to those in need.
Your posting also reminds me of the poem or prose you sent out earlier. I just wish I could remember the entire passage.

We all need to pay attention to the lessons here. There's always the
important one about enjoying each day, not deferring all our pleasures
and adventures for "someday," because we never know how long our lives
will last. Then there's a simpler one, about always exercising great
caution in dangerous circumstances. I'm one of the guys on our schooner
crew who will go aloft, and for the first few years I disdained
harnesses and tethers. Then I looked down and saw how far it was, and
thought about how easy it would be to forget where I was an fall, and
added up the number of stupid mistakes I'd made in the last week alone.
I started wearing the harnesses--good OSHA harnesses that are a pain to
get into--and using a good tether. If somebody like our old listserv
friend BC can make an error, the rest of us are even more likely to do so.

Guys,
I am shocked and saddened at Brian's passing.
Brian was largely responsible for making the Cal List the venue that it is today. He devoted huge chunks of his time to instruct and inspire those of us that maintain and restore our beloved old Cals.
He was always ready to share his VAST store of hard won knowledge, and was an encouragement to me when I was very discouraged. Mariposa might have ended up in the breakers yard if not for Brian's kind assistance.
I spent a wonderful day with him at his boatyard in Sacramento a bunch of years ago…. I can't believe he's gone.

I believe it is true than when Roger Jones passed, he went to Nevada and helped Lori Jones retire Rogers fleet?

My best wishes to the family! I have twice nearly fallen from a mast. Once in 1976 I had a rope break in the plank chair I was in.
I had a sail tie around my chest looped into the halyard and it saved me. I had a similar experience in 1991. Aloft in a boatyard I nearly came separated from my chair on a Santa Cruz 27 in more wind than I should have gone up in alone. You can't jump into the water. You may be in serious danger. Think twice. At sea it's another event. At the dock or on the hard the risk multiplies!

A young man was killed at North Sails, San Diego years ago. He was
working alone on the weekend. He fell through the roof and was found
Monday morning.
