Thanks Alfred for your great remembrance of our old friend BC. Yes, he was all of the things you said in your msg. always willing and quick to offer his great depth of boat knowledge. In the early 90's, when we were just beginning to form what became the famous "CCCCC" ("California CAL Catalina Cruising Club"), Brian heard of the noise we were making on the web, joined in, and shortly after flew down to L.A. to assist me in re-rigging Leading lady, my CAL 31 - or more correctly, I assisted him in re-rigging Leading Lady. Later, as our friendship grew, I would stay in Brian and Rose's guest house in their backyard on various business trips, and spend time with him at his boatyard in Sacramento as he did wonders to old boats. He was always very free with the correct advise and help we rank amateurs were getting in trouble over when attempting to work on our boats. He definitely assisted in bringing together what became a wonderful group of CAL
boats that over the succeeding years had many weekend rendezvous at Howlands Landing, on Catalina Island, with up to 15 - 20 Cal's attending from San Diego North to Santa Barbara - with occasional Cal visitors from around the U.S.
In 2004, I sold my wonderful Leading Lady (best boat I have ever owned!), retired and moved to Seattle. A few years later, in 2008, I had to get back out on the water, and bought a 44' 1982 Freedom Cat Ketch to sail around Puget Sound and beyond. My old CAL burgee, a bit threadbare now, is however, always up and flying high!
