That doesn't speak well for the Nexus. Why would you not buy it again and
what would you buy?

Allen,
The wind instrument stopped working after about two years. Moisture got into the speed display after about four years. The stuff could not be repaired, just replaced. They would sell me replacements for a slightly discounted price. To be fair a friend had the same system and he claims it works fine. I did not have very good luck. Seems to me that the more established guys build stuff that is bullet proof. I have not shopped anything for a while but would probably buy Raymarine.

Does anyone on this list have experience, good or bad, with Nexus?

Tim and All!
I first have to apologize for calling it a paddle wheel. My other Cal friends in Rochester called it a speed wheel. I got adventerous today and found the fitting way underneath the v-bearth up near one of the holding tanks. I managed to get it out and realized it is a sealed unit with a sending wire to the knot indicator in the cockpit. The unit appeared to be in ok condition, with no debris imbedded, and the wheel spins freely. The unit is exactly like the one that Tim posted in his reply. This was the first summer the boat has sailed in twelve plus years. I can undrstand the excitment it would cause with a gusher coming in the boat! I don't think I'll be that brave to do that type of work while in the water. I do have wooden boat plugs with the boat!
The individual who had the boat has a switch panel on the lower floor bulkhead (starboard side), next to the battery switch label "Instr". I turn that on everytime I sail. I also noticed that there is also a "on/off" switch on the instrumemt istself. I'm assuming that has to be in the 'On' position or is that just a light switch??
Is there replacement parts avaialble and where to get them? Are they matched to the instrument? Thanks to all for responding and I appreciate the interest!
Have a great sailing day!

Yeah, I’m the only one on my boat who will pull the speedo impellor to put in the plug. Everybody else panics when the water starts to gush. Good idea to have a piece of cloth handy to cram in the hole in case you drop the plug during the transition.

Dude,
I’m curious and stumped as to what you are asking, do you mean the knot log paddlewheel (the red thing below)?
the magnets should be embedded in the paddles, check with a hand
compass.
paddles can go bad, if you keep the log in the water all the time.
I remove mine after racing and put the blank plug in… otherwise you can see what grows down there.

Water wheel [Nexus]
ti… [at] ch2m.com2011-12-08 20:31 UTC
I too would be interested as to why Nexus does not work for you.
I have two complete systems on Freewind and California Girl. Combined they have 9 trips to and from Hawaii and numerous coastal voyages from Mexico to Canada logging well over 100,000 nm.
Both systems exceed 15 years of service and have yet to fail. They are reaching the end of their material science, as the plastic has begun to craze on some screens after 15 years in the elements, yet they still work.
I have sailed with Raymarine, tack tick, as well as Signet and Garmin... my experience and opinion is that these systems are quite pale in comparison.
As one of the first integrated instrument systems, the Nexus information is easily available on a laptop using third party and in house software. I particularly like the self calibrating and race day wind twist features. The output from the instruments updates my laptop, autopilot, vhf radio, Epirb and via Bluetooth, any other capable device.
I can record any sailing day and replay it real time or accelerated to critique a race or event. There are so many other features to brag about, I hardly know where to begin.
Accuracy, longevity, flexibility, survivability, price, simplicity. I've not discovered a system that is remotely comparable - on any aspect.

If I read correct, sounds like the instrument heads failed?
Nexus uses a pretty good system, including a Gore-Tex breather. The newer NX2s are improved.
Instruments are a good sized investment of time, and money , we store them two different ways to protect that investment.
I know of very few electronic devices at a consumer level that can survive continuous exposure to the environment and fewer that can survive in marine conditions.
So,
1. We use a pod; removable so the instruments are not in the weather the 6-8 months of the year they are not being used.
[cid:image010.jpg@01CCB5C2.553C4D80][cid:image011.jpg@01CCB5C2.553C4D80][cid:image012.jpg@01CCB5C2.553C4D80]
2. The instruments that we have placed “ permanently on the bulkhead” I have built a recessed mount, that keeps the instrument heads from protruding into the cockpit space, and decrease weather exposure.

Allen,
The wind instrument stopped working after about two years.

That doesn't speak well for the Nexus. Why would you not buy it again and what would you buy?

I did huge research on TackTick and in the process "discovered" both Garmin, which I dismissed as I an not going to run wires up my mast, and Nexus.
Does anyone on this list have experience, good or bad, with Nexus?

Jim,
The sending unit,(paddle wheel, transducer) usually is mated to the display unit. I believe some units are interchangeable, but you need to research that. I have a West Marine speedo that was made by Standard. My depth finder is a Standard Horizon, they look the same and will work together. Both are now discontinued and I have moisture in the speedo display, so it may be time for replacement. Another boat buck. I like the idea of wireless, but don't understand all the options, and am looking at a Garmin system.

RE: [Cal_Boats] Water wheel [Nexus]

I have the Nexus Classic.. the old stuff, with an FDX server on both boats.
I am slowly updating as necessary to the newer NX2 and NXR , simply because the plastic cases are in failure mode.
The new and old stuff is interchangeable; same RS485 data bus internal and NMEA 0183 external output/inputs

No matter how much you push the envelope, it'll still be stationery.

I'm going to write a song for Timm called "Sailing with My DooDads". I think it will be to the tune of "Working in the Coal Mines" by Lee Dorsey.
Cheers
