Fin, nice!
My WSA group (uh, woman's sailing association, who sponsor's my racing activities) won all-around best float prize in the Holiday Float Parade Sat. nite, with a member and friend's brand new 50' catamaran. The boat would have been moored at the end of my dock except for a snafu with the dock master's reservations. I like how you spelled Christ-tmas, which is how most people pronounce it.

ti… [at] ch2m.com2011-12-13 18:34 UTC
I spoke with Mr. Lapworth this afternoon, Stan -
Thanks for the contact information. He was much as I recalled him (pretty
droll) - realize that when I worked for Jack Jensen, Mister Lapworth had little interest in us plant minions. I HEARD him a lot (he and Jack often conversed rather loudly and heatedly) when I was in the office, but saw him only seldom. He seemed VERY OLD to me then - must have been in his early forties - with graying hair. Wonder how that makes ME look to the kids I work around...
Anyway, enough reminiscing.
He said he'd be happy to look at the fleet description (part of the deed of
gift) for the trophy and that he had "no problem" with his name being one of those to whom it is to be dedicated and he agreed that we need to open up the Transpac more to production boats in the forty foot range. Actually, between us, doing this is the only way I know of saying thanks to Jack, who was a friend to me at a time in my life when I really needed a father image, but I think it's proper to include Mr. Lapworth, because, although often reluctantly, they were quite a team.
Mr. Lapworth also told me that he will send me a set of lines for the Cal 29 (I own hull number 1 and am in process of a major rebuild for single-handed
passage-making) for $100 (in advance). In fact he said he'd sell anyone a set of lines for their boats for $100 a copy in advance - said he got stiffed by some folks in the past. He told me that he has already sent some of his drawings to Mystic for permanent archiving and that later on he will send all the Cal drawings. I was very pleased to hear that. It's the perfect place for them, even though it's on the wrong coast. Hehehe.
As to Mr. Griffith - whom I don't know - perhaps we can figure out some way that he and Mr. Lapworth can be there to present the first trophy after next year's Transpac. I also want to make certain and will include in the deed that for the first year (2003) the trophy can only go to the Cal 40 fleet.
After that, it's wide open. Make sense?
Anyway, it will be interesting to see where all this goes.
Thanks again.

Roger,
The legend is that George asked Bill Lapworth to design a radical ocean racer with a fin keel, spade rudder, relatively big rig, hard bilges (flat bottom) and light weight (by standards in those days). The numbers were radical enough so that Jensen wasn't willing to build a mold on speculation, and Lapworth was nervous about designing it. So George had to pre-sell some number of boats in order to get the Cal 40 built; I forget the number. I further recall that the original design had a slightly shorter rig, but the extrusions came in the current length so George and Bill (thankfully) decided to just use the whole thing.
George got the first boat, Persephone, and was able to pre-sell the required number of boats, mostly among Los Angeles Yacht Club members (where most of those original boats remain). The rest of the story is history and the Cal 40 dominated ocean racing on both the East and West Coasts for 5 years or so after its introduction, and every ocean racer since reflects a bit of the innovations introduced by the Cal 40.
At the time I was growing up and learning to ocean race out of LAYC, crewing on Cal 40's from time to time. Bill Lapworth's phone number is
949 443 9750, and George Griffith's phone number is 562 439 6723. If my number for Bill Lapworth is out of date, George would have Bill's new number; they are fast friends. I ran into Bill at a recent CCA dinner and recall that he was moving.
Cheers,
Stan

I'm past 40 by half again (plus) and have an appointment to conduct a
student interview for my undergrad school in a few minutes. She's going
to have the same reaction. But then, I was talking to my brother, who
has given me his old mountain bike, when we were kids, nobody our
current age would have been seen on a bicycle. If they had, they'd have
been viewed as really eccentric.

Re: [Cal_Boats] decade old memories; Roger, Wendy, Stan, Bill,
kevin sauvage2011-12-14 01:32 UTC
Hi Chris,
I think about this all the time. Other then a few more aches and pains I don't feel much different then when I did at 40. I was looking at some pictures of John Guzzwell that were taken during his circumnavigation in the 21' yawl Trekka, 1955-1959. He was in his mid-20's and does he look young. I remember reading his book Trekka Around the World while I was in junior high school and thinking how old he was. I was 14.
Today he is in his in his 80's and still sailing. He's starting to look old to me again.

I'm past 40 by half again (plus) and have an appointment to conduct
a student interview for my undergrad school in a few minutes. She's
going to have the same reaction. But then, I was talking to my
brother, who has given me his old mountain bike, when we were kids,
nobody our current age would have been seen on a bicycle. If they
had, they'd have been viewed as really eccentric.

I spoke with Mr. Lapworth this
afternoon, Stan ->;
Thanks for the contact
information. He was much as I recalled him (pretty
droll) - realize that when I
worked for Jack Jensen, Mister Lapworth had little
interest in us plant minions. I HEARD him a lot (he
and Jack often conversed rather loudly and heatedly)
when I was in the office, but saw him only seldom. He
seemed VERY OLD to me then - must have been in his
early forties - with graying hair. Wonder how that
makes ME look to the kids I work around...
Anyway, enough reminiscing.
He said he'd be happy to look at
the fleet description (part of the deed of
gift) for the trophy and that he
had "no problem" with his name being one of those to
whom it is to be dedicated and he agreed that we need
to open up the Transpac more to production boats in
the forty foot range. Actually, between us, doing this
is the only way I know of saying thanks to Jack, who
was a friend to me at a time in my life when I really
needed a father image, but I think it's proper to
include Mr. Lapworth, because, although often
reluctantly, they were quite a team.
Mr. Lapworth also told me that
he will send me a set of lines for the Cal 29 (I own
hull number 1 and am in process of a major rebuild for
single-handed
passage-making) for $100 (in
advance). In fact he said he'd sell anyone a set of
lines for their boats for $100 a copy in advance -
said he got stiffed by some folks in the past. He told
me that he has already sent some of his drawings to
Mystic for permanent archiving and that later on he
will send all the Cal drawings. I was very pleased to
hear that. It's the perfect place for them, even
though it's on the wrong coast. Hehehe.
As to Mr. Griffith - whom I
don't know - perhaps we can figure out some way that
he and Mr. Lapworth can be there to present the first
trophy after next year's Transpac. I also want to make
certain and will include in the deed that for the
first year (2003) the trophy can only go to the Cal 40
fleet.
After that, it's wide open. Make
sense?
Anyway, it will be interesting
to see where all this goes.
Thanks again.

Roger,
The legend is that George asked
Bill Lapworth to design a radical ocean racer with a
fin keel, spade rudder, relatively big rig, hard
bilges (flat bottom) and light weight (by standards in
those days). The numbers were radical enough so that
Jensen wasn't willing to build a mold on speculation,
and Lapworth was nervous about designing it. So
George had to pre-sell some number of boats in order
to get the Cal 40 built; I forget the number. I
further recall that the original design had a slightly
shorter rig, but the extrusions came in the current
length so George and Bill (thankfully) decided to just
use the whole thing.
George got the first boat,
Persephone, and was able to pre-sell the required
number of boats, mostly among Los Angeles Yacht Club
members (where most of those original boats remain).
The rest of the story is history and the Cal 40
dominated ocean racing on both the East and West
Coasts for 5 years or so after its introduction, and
every ocean racer since reflects a bit of the
innovations introduced by the Cal 40.
At the time I was growing up and
learning to ocean race out of LAYC, crewing on Cal
40's from time to time. Bill Lapworth's phone number
is
949 443 9750, and George
Griffith's phone number is 562 439 6723. If my number
for Bill Lapworth is out of date, George would have
Bill's new number; they are fast friends. I ran into
Bill at a recent CCA dinner and recall that he was
moving.
Cheers,
Stan

Re: [Cal_Boats] Radiant - Dressed for Christtmas(Mike K.)

Mike,
You said you had a bad year. Man, that can encompass a lot. I had a sorta bad year too, sailing wise. Health-wise great for me. Not so good for my spouse. She fell, busted her shoulder to bits, surgery in July, rehab following, and I am driver, housekeeper, etc. Not much sailing, and bad weather to boot here, but we do what we have to do, she is still doing her exercises daily, and I think will be 100% soon.
Regards,
David Dobbs, CAL29 411

I don't know about you, Kevin, but the only accurate way to describe me
at that age was "14 and stupid." One of the great gifts of aging is
the accumulation of wisdom and knowledge. Another one, made possible by
others' knowledge, is the ability to defer the worst effects of old age
and enjoy putting the wisdom to work. I don't mind being an old fart
so much if I can go sailing & bicycling & skiing and enjoy it all so
much more than when I was young and stupid.

I read the obits and calculate the % of the people who were in their
90s. Even on a day when the numbers aren't good, I am reminded that I
don't want mine to say "he liked yard work and going to the casino."
