Fixed/Feathering Props
Jim Ives2011-12-18 20:36 UTC
Hi Everyone,,
I have been following the discussion on here in regards to propellers, fixed vs. feathering. Here is a link that may be worth checking if anyone is interested or going to re-prop/power their boat. I know there has been some discussion about the Kiwi props, in which I was considering as well. I don't think that these prices are to bad.

Jim,
Just realize that a plastic prop will not survive an encounter with a sunken log. I have personal knowledge of this! PO had installed a CDI flexible on the boat, I sailed that summer and on the way to the yard in the fall ran into something, noticed that the boat was now vibrating a little, but we were still moving. Since we were in a blinding rainstorm, I just kept going. Got to the yard, they hauled the boat and I was missing one blade of the prop. Put the bronze two blade back on next season. I bought an Indigo prop this year, but didn't use the boat enough to rate it yet.
For the Kiwi fans I can only tell you what their rep told me last year; it won't work with the direct drive A4.

OUCH! Sorry to hear that! Did you bend your shaft? You raise a very good point about encountering sunken debris with a vnyl prop. It may not be a good idea after all!

No,
Shaft was okay, I now have the 3 blade Indigo but I didn't use the boat enough last season to evaluate it's performance, but that's a different story. I also need to install a tach this winter so I can really evaluate the performance. And fix the throttle linkage, and replace the leaking port, and redo the mast wiring, and .....

perhaps an advantage to a plastic prop is that it is partially sacrificial and still functional?

I like the weight of the vynl vs the heavy bronze, and the ability of the prop to "flex" to the correct pitch as they claim. But as I think of it, and of course from your's and the groups past experience and wisdom, I'll still keep my metal prop. Metal props can still be bent to some degree, especially if the underwater debris is petrified!
