For the Great Lakes sailors on the list
Ken Akers2011-12-16 23:09 UTC
This is not exactly sailing content, but it is nautical! My father worked as a
sailor aboard the Henry G. Dalton, a classic Laker bulk freighter operated by
Interlake Steamship Co. For his upcoming 84th birthday I would love to find a
model or line drawing of this ship or similar ones of the era. Any of you Great
Lakes sailors know of a nautical museum or other source where I might find
something like this?
Many thanks,
Ken Akers

Not enough time, I suspect unless they have one made. It might be
worth while to inquire.

Capt. Jerry be up in the Bay Area.
Gerald Sobel2011-12-17 00:30 UTC
I'm up in the SF Bay Area near Palo Alto, for me mother's 97th birthday, till Monday. I don't know if I'm going to have time to go sailing but if anyone up here wants to give me a shout out
regarding their sailing plans or crew position availability, feel free to do so.
The number is 650-493-4971
Best Regards,
Jerry

Try the marine museum i Lorain Ohio they have an extensive collection also try the Detroit museum on Bell Isle. I was on the Joe S. Morrow in 1953 and was able to trace her history and she was built in the 1890s. also BGSU in BG Ohio has info.

Perhaps this will help - google Dossin Maritime Museum - - or go to www.detroithistorical.org/main/dossin
They may have archived prints you can get a hold of.

There seems to be a lot of information on Google.
http://drc.library.bgsu.edu/handle/2374.BGSU/1655
I would search there first for a maritime museum or other.

Here's a reply with sailing content. A captain/first mate on the
schooner /Inland Seas /is a gifted artist who does "renderings" (his
term) of various vessels. His Great Lakes commercial vessels are here:
I've got his version of the John J. McWilliams, a boat built in Bay
City, where I grew up. Scroll to the very bottom and check out the
Henry Steinbrenner, which may be similar to your dad's Dalton (I don't
know that boat).
Bowling Green State U. has a Great Lakes archive with records of vessels
built by American Shipbuilding, Great Lakes Engineering, and Defoe
Shipbuilding. I've donated blueprints from the Davidson yard to them.
Check here:
BGSU has a nice photo of the Dalton here:
There's the Dossin Great Lakes Museum on Belle Isle in Detroit with
another wealth of collections:
Here's a page with multiple photos of the Dalton from the Father Dowling
collection. He was a Detroit-area priest with a huge collection of
documents on Lakes freighters.
And also see more photos from this collection here:

There's another photo here, this one in color, about 1/3 down the page:

My guess is that you're not going to get a model on short notice but you
may be able to purchase a photo from one of these sources or maybe even
find drawings that they could reproduce.

Thanks Mike, this Bearco Marine site has great models, and I'll probably
go with one of the smaller ones (don't know where he'd keep the 6' long
version!).
And to everyone else who replied with links to historical societies,
museums, etc., thank you very much - amazing history there.
Merry Christmas to all.

Great stuff, thanks. The color picture from the 50's is especially nice.
Sailor humor - His story of his first day aboard. I'm sure he was a just a junior deckhand, lowest guy on the ladder. At the first meal he politely asked, just as his mother had told him, something like "Please pass the potatoes." To which came the gruff reply "Shut up kid and eat what's near ya!" :)
