2-29 Engine Replacement Feedback

James2012-01-06 17:15
As usual, the combined knowledge of this group calms my indecisive nature....thanks folks. 16 hp, it is... just so I can brag about the size of my engine to my dock mates. I thought last year was the last of the major projects! All I have to do after this is replace the fiberglass and it will practically a new boat.

Two items, James. 1) As with Cigarette boats and Dodge Chargers, having something big under your hood is important in some circles. 2) Why are you slacking? Time to get on with replacing that fiberglas. Seriously, I wonder if anyone has calculated a lifetime for that stuff in marine environments. Would Messrs. Lapworth and Jensen have been surprised to see some of their (now 50+years old) fiberglas products still in use? RE: [Cal_Boats] 2-29 Engine Replacement Feedback (TRANSMISSION)

While HP is important, the mating transmission is also important. The (universal) Westerbeeke 20hp engine I put in our (29') Cal 9.2 was of course too large (maybe), but the STOCK factory mating transmission was not rated to use that much horsepower under continuous use. While motoring out of the Straits of Juan de Fuca, in a gale, the (new) engine did fine at near full throttle in the high seas and current, but the tranny failed. Joe (Demers) sold me the a different brand, (TMC40M) larger transmission (rated for 2x the engine hp), so that issue should never happen again. So if you have a possibility of being in larger winds, currents, dinghy towing loads or other high power conditions, make sure the mated transmission is rated for your intended use. I think many of the original builders would be amazed at some of the classics that are still floating: Pearson's, Columbia's, Tartans, Yankee's and Tanzers come to mind. Most don't have a single issue with the hull. Individual cases of poor layup exist due to difference in the quality control. And those are only the American builders. We must no forget that the CDN's, Brits, Dutch, French and Germans put out some excellent craft as well, some sold in NA some not. /ch On Fri, Jan 6, 2012 at 4:27 PM, Husar, Charlie [USA] (ASE) <hu… [at] bah.com> wrote: > Two items, James. > > 1) As with Cigarette boats and Dodge Chargers, having something big under your hood is important in some circles. > > 2) Why are you slacking?
