Is anyone interested in a tiller yoke and rudder post head? Will fit Cal 36 and probably Cal 40 Mike Robinson Holiday

Mike, If it will fit the 3-30, I'm interested. Mine has an incredible amount of slop in it. I will be able to get to the boat in the next day or so and take measurements. What is the distance between the tangs, and the diameter of the rudder post? Mike, I too, am interested. The tiller head/yoke on my cal 28 has too much slope in it as well. If Fred does not take it/buy it, I would jump at the chance. I found that there was not enough rise in my tiller handle to keep the head/yoke engaged. I noted no play when the tiller was in its lowest position. Solution? new tiller with higher rise to suit my height so head/yoke stayed fully engaged. cheap and pretty! Several items related to the size of rudder tubes and slop in the tiller. First, I'm sure the 36/40 collar will not fit the 28 and I doubt it will fit the 30. Rudder tube is fatter on the bigger boats. Second, numerous methods have been proposed to take the slop out of a tiller/rudder. Some have put holes in the sides of the fiberglas tube, and injected epoxy (with some lubrication into the column. I know a guy who did this on his 25 and thus learned that his steel rudder post was just a weeee bit crooked. It took us several days to get the damned thing out. Some have mounted oilite (or roller) bearings top (and in cases the bottom) in the tube column. Effective, but not trivial. As far as the oilites (I think that was the name of the material) go, as Barlow (or was it Barient?) used to be able to attest, the iolite material can swell when greased. They tried this bearing surface inside winches instead of rollers, and had to recall them all. I had some. The more you lubricate them the tighter they got. One can get vertical play out of the rudder by putting discs of plastic above the rudder underneath, and/below the rudder cap above. I make them from mylar using two different sized hole saws. The one between the hull and rudder is useful in preventing scraping as well as shimming out the play. My favorite trick is to wrap a piece of plastic from a smooth sided 2 liter soda bottle most of the way around the rudder post with some grease on it as I push the rudder up into place. It slides on up into the tube. Use two if you have to. Takes out a lot of play. Charlie, The suggestions you have made seem to be to fix any slop associated with the rudder shaft. My rudder shaft is well constrained in 5 of its 6 degrees of freedom. It can rotate and only rotate. All of the sloppiness in my tiller arrangement is a result of the interaction between the two parts pictured above. I suppose the proper terms are tiller yoke and tiller post? The tiller 'yoke' is simply two flat bronze bars (NOT like the picture). Two through bolts into the tiller and a third bolt serves as the axle connection to the tiller post. That axle has a lot of slop in it and so I drilled out the bore a bit and machined a stainless sleeve. It has helped quite a bit but I am still getting unwanted deflection in the tiller yoke. Mike and Dianne, I hope the Moody is a step up, other than larger, but your plans sound like a nice jump into the next part of your life. We have a cal 36 in Redwood City(soon to be hauled out for bottom paint) and if it doesn't work for the other boats, we could use it. But the big question, who did your nice railings and bow pulpit for Holiday? We have to replace our bow pulpit completely(did you already tell us in an earlier mail?) We like the gate positions also. Just got her into Latitude and now she's going?? tell the new owners about the cal list and hopefully they will be in on a future Caltopia. Hello Helen and Edward, We are excited about the adventure. The Moody is a very nice boat (photos attached) The rudder/tiller parts are no charge, still available. Need someone to pick them up or pay pastage. Holiday hand rails: I love them. Metal Magic in Oakland (Craig) made them. The bow pulpit was a single tube version on the boat when I purchased. Craig at Metal Magic added the second rail. He did make up a bow pulpit for Richardd Clopton, Cal 40 XL. Craig is very good and easy to work with. The gates and stanchions are Garhauer. I remember your 36 purchase, did you sell your Cal 29?? yes, we sold our 29 Noah's Kid to a friend to whom we sold a catalina 22 before he got tsunamied in Santa Cruz, didn't get destroyed but took a beating. He works in Sausalito, and has sailing friends there so he bought the 29 and the friends are helping him sail it there and he probably saves a few nights of commuting back and forth during the week to Santa Cruz. It was hard to part with, but the larger boat was what we were working toward, and the 36 turns on the dime like the 29, we love it, but are still working on it, putting in new fuel tank, refinishing the interior(ceiling boards revarnishing) and upholstery. We are helping the potential new owner of the 30 we bought to sell (for the canvas maker who had to move back to socal to care for elderly parents) do a haulout and survey in Berkeley:sailing up Thursday, hauling Friday, plus bottom paint. So, Edward will be in Oakland on Wednesday, probably too late into Berkeley on Thursday, and then any time on the weekend. What would be best for you for him to come pick up the pieces? Mike, The width of the casting that my tiller head slips over is 1 7/8". The outside diameter of the rudder head casting is 3 1/4". If these are consistent with your pieces I'd sure like to get them. My challenge is that the I.D. of the tang on the rudder casting is worn so that I have almost 6" of endplay on the tiller before the rudder moves. I have thought about attempting to crush the ends of the tang to close the 1/16" or so gap, or possibly taking the two pieces to a machine shop and having them built up and remachined. What does the group think? Another question, is my rudder likely to sink or float if I remove the head casting to deal with this challenge? Mike, I was able to get to Nemesis yesterday. The width of the casting at the pivot point on my rudder head is 1 7/8" The distance between the tangs on the tier bracket is enough wider that have 4-6" play at the end of the tiller. While I could't get at the rudder post itself, the width of the top casting at he top of the post is 3 1/4". If these dimensions are consistent with your pieces, I'd sure like to have them. I'm sorry Fred, Charlie Husar in Annapolis claimed the parts. They are on the way to him. I'm not sure if he has an immediate need or not, might want to check with him. Fred, I now have the parts from Mike. The interior width of the fork is 2-1/2 inches, and the OD of the rudder tube is 3-1/2". I got the parts from Mike with hopes to use them on a CAL 40. Looks like they will work.
