replacement windows

am… [at] stuffandjunk.net2011-12-31 11:54 UTC
The previous owner of my 2-29 used something horrendous to try and seal the windows in the cabin and stop the leaking. As carefully as I could, I removed the substance and put foam weather stripping in its place. That worked fine for most of the windows. But the plastic frames cracked pretty badly on a couple of them and, after a year, it looks like I'm going to have to replace the windows. I just did a search and found a *ton* of places that will provide window replacements for a boat. So my question for the collective wisdom is: have any of you used any of these services? Is there anyone you'd recommend? Thanks in advance! Anne Racel 4 Degrees http://boatjournal.stuffandjunk.net

Hi, Anne. Since you said plastic frames, the windows might have been from Mark Plastics in Corona, CA. Mark Heacox has templates for most CAL models there. He is/was a CAL racer. Previous owner might have use 3M 5200? I'm pretty sure all original windows in Jensen CALs had aluminum frames. You may wish to consider this method. Tested on a Cal 20 and going solid for three years now on a friends boat. http://www.thecoastalpassage.com/windows.html /ch

I believe too that Go Lights was the original Cal boat lights manufacturer; lights= (non opening windows) whereas ports are opening lights. Mark Plastics is either "Go Lights " with an new name, or Mark has picked up the original Cal templates. Either way - Mark does a fantastic job - he's real old school with service and gave very good directions on how to install. I replaced all of California Girl's lights with Mark's product - 4 lights in part of a day. I opted for his "one size larger windows" as the factory openings were part of the original cause of the leakage. The openings were poorly and unevenly cut, leaving minimal flange edge available for sealing the frames. With the oversized window I was able to true up the openings and perform a better than factory installation. Mark sells his favorite installation "goop" (caulking) that to date (3 years) is flawless. If you install the goop using blue tape fillets, you can get a nicely finished even bead. The owner of the operation before Marl Heacox cleverly got around the problem of "ports" and "lights" by naming his operation "Go Windows". They were indeed one of the original suppliers to Jensen Marine. Mark Plastics is indeed the son of Go Windows. Initially Mark advertised as "Mark Plastics - maker of Go Windows". I visited Mark Plastics a while back. The "lobby" out front of the shop had window templates stacked all over the place. No place to sit as I recall. Mark is a heck of a guy. Once bought 5 sets of CAL 25 windows (a mixed bag of ports and lights) for our local folks in Annapolis. Also be prepared to make selections among different shades/tints of plexi or having glass in the "windows". We have a '87 Cal 33. The box for the engine control at the helm has developed UV degradation and is now cracked and in need of replacement. OEM parts for this model are, of course, not available. The cover/access plate is for a 8x16 cutout, with sliding doors. The box contains a standard yanmar engine control with room for a fuel gauge and aux spotlight plug. I could use some help locating a new box and cover. If this is something mark may have been involved with, how can I contact him to discuss or send pics/measurements? John Raxter _

Hello folks, I own a glass shop and have some experience with sailboats and glass. Technically, and I'm not really a technical kind of guy, but we are talking about lites. The old timers in our business always called a piece of auto or boat glass a lite. I've cut and installed quite a few pieces of flat glass for sailboats. Most of them, including my cal34 have a frame that is screwed or bolted together and sandwiches the seal between the boat and the glass. To be sure...this is not the OEM way of doing it, but it is easier, safer, and much more cost effective. Any glass shop will be able to cut you a piece of Laminated safety glass off of a pattern. There are multiple tints available green...blue...grey...bronze...etc. if you really want to take the project to the next level, have them make a piece of tempered glass from your pattern. It will be much stronger and will still break safely if something happens. The best way I've found to seal the windows when installing is a product called M-seal, or foam core butyl tape. The old boats and most automobiles up until 1986 used regular butyl tape to seal glass and Windshields. The foam core gives the butyl more pressure to keep the seal tight and make it stay that way. I have yet to have problems with leakage using this system, and if you ever have to replace them again removal isn't a nightmare. Hope this helps! I sent him cutouts of brown paper and he made the "lights" I used standard opening ports for those that opened. I made the mistake of not getting the ports with rain drains. If the ports are tilted inboard, get the ones with drains. Sounds obvious but I almost replaced them. Thanks for the contact for Mark’s Plastic. He had the actual replacement for our Cal 33! The replacement part will fit into the existing opening in our cockpit, and I can still use the Yanmar control, and accessory plugs and gauges in the same location as the OEM control panel. If anyone is in need of this for their ’87 Cal, Mark has the moulds and can easily provide you with the exact replacement needed! Looks like the Hunt designed, IOResque, Cal 35, but could it be a Lapworth? I think not. The price has already jumped up to $610. I think buy the time I round up a couple of oxen, rent a Conestoga Wagon (my girlfriend's neighbors have one in their front yard, but it is in worse shape than this boat) and fight the tribes and rustlers on the Overland Trail back to the Right Coast to check the boat out in person, the auction will be over. I've learned the HARD way NEVER to buy a boat sight unseen, now matter how cheep it is. The price should go up considerably towards the end of the auction, like, in the last ten minutes. Jerry PS. One of the local boat requers was parting out a Cal 2-27 with the prettiest blue hull you ever saw, on Craig's List. Very sad. If not mistaken Ive seen this vessel in Georgia on a salvage lot due to hurricane damage. This one needs some serious work to her. Some salvage boats are worth it. Not this one unless you are in the marine trade and get parts at whole sale. Even then it will be expensive. As far as your comments in brackets, completely agree with you and send you and the lads my regrets. Keep the faith....things will get better. As far as buying boats unseen sometimes you do get lucky. Picked up a Hurley 22 (real blue water boat) for 300 of ebay and resold her to a friend. She came with brand new wardrobe of sails and about 1000 dollars with of kit below decks. She needs rub stakes, partial running rigging, and a bottom job and a thorough cleaning below decks. Being a bilge keel she;s easy to work on. Sometimes you do get lucky, good pictures and knowing the vessel help a lot in reducing the risk. The hull on these vessels is Lloyds certified. With a shipwright our of BC we worked out an inexpensive solution for the rub strakes. Machined and shaped Trex. Cant tell the difference between weathered teak till you get real close and no maintenance. Saved a lot of the restoration budget. /ch

Looks like the one that went ashore in Norfolk, Va late last year during a hurricane. The owner tried to make port just before the storm hit but engine broke and winds would not allow safe passage into Hampton roads. They tried to anchor off the spit but dragged the anchor for awhile then the rode split. The local TV station had 10 minutes of footage of them getting pounded by waves prior to getting broadsided and washing ashore. This one needs some serious work to her. Some salvage boats are worth it. Not this one unless you are in the marine trade and get parts at whole sale. Even then it will be expensive.
