Vire engine, transmission slips?

vegasrigger2012-02-03 19:28
Hello Group! I was hoping you might offer me a bit of guidance. When I put my engine into forward gear and throttle up, the rpms come way up, then over about 4 seconds the engine begins to load up and the boat starts to make way. At first I suspected that the prop was cavitating, but the more I examine, the more I think it is the transmission slipping. What to do? Thanks! Darcy Cal 27 PT

Is it a Hurth transmission? Sounds just like what I had. Reverse worked fine forward not so much. I ended up buying a new transmission from Joe Demers. Everything is great now. Darcy, I have seen a Hurth tyranny pull that stunt before. It turned out that the shifter mechanism was sticky and the gear was not fully engaged. This is an easy fix if this is the problem. Ensure that the cable throws far enough to fully engage. It should slide smoothly also. There should be an adjustment nut on the cable where it attaches to the lever. Adjust it in the way that makes the most sense. Hope this helps. The folks here may have some other, better solutions. They're a good group of fart smellers. Mike..fart smellers? How about just reading the results of gas chromatography, or maybe the digital computerized version which must have replaced what I seen used 40 yars ago. How 'bout, just calling us: bildge sniffers? Reminds me of the noxious looking brown liquid I tasted to see whether is was from rain water or sea water when I had Shpritz on the hard, after buying her and innocently taking her down to Annacappa Marine for a quick haul and pressure wersh. Me credit card balances have never been the same. Aarrgh. And since we are a boating site, we can call it a "Schoonerism". (Insert punful groan here...). At any rate, back to the real topic; Does anyone else have info that may help Darcy and her transmission woes? I think her symptoms could also be caused by a line wrapped just right on the prop shaft...? Vire engine, transmission problem and options

Joe DeMers2012-02-03 23:32 UTC
The Vire transmission is unique to Vire engines. Repair parts are impossible to find, and Westerbeke no longer supports this old engine. MAYBE the transmission can be repaired by making the needed parts, along with a large dose of luck. Looks like a repower is in your future. The least expensive option is outboard power, then a used inboard diesel or gas engine, then a new diesel engine. Your boat has everything needed for an inboard installation, such as prop shaft, fuel system, engine bed, etc already installed. It would be a straightforward process to repower with an inboard engine. *Joe DeMers - owner* Sound Marine Diesel LLC SoundMarineDiesel.com <http://www.soundmarinediesel.com/> *phone & fax (860) 666-2184* On 2/3/2012 6:06 PM, Joe DeMers wrote: > > > Is this a Vire 6 or Vire 7 engine? > > *Joe DeMers - owner * > > Sound Marine Diesel LLC > > SoundMarineDiesel.com <http://www.soundmarinediesel.com/> > > *phone & fax (860) 666-2184 * > > > > On 2/3/2012 6:05 PM, mike wrote: >> And since we are a boating site, we can call it a "Schoonerism". Oh, I forgot I missed the point I was trying to make, regarding sniffing out the problem, after a fashion. The nasty brown water pooled in the bilge tasted very salty, and sure enuff, I found a hairline crack near where the keel joined the hull. After I pumped out the bildge with a plunger pump that came with the boat, I found huge rock candy sized salt crystals. Apparently the leak was so slow it was evaporating as fast as it was leaking. And so salty there was no dry rot, of course. Jerry *> To unsubscribe from this group, send an email to: >Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com > >*> Your use of Yahoo!
