Mark, I had some luck rebuilding a broken section of the "lip" using
thickened epoxy. It wasn't as extensive as your damage appears, but that
might be an alternative to consider.
Or you could get yourself a couple inexpensive grinders from Harbor Freight
and just finish the job. If you need inspiration (or want to be talked out
of doing it), consider what David "Wilkie" Owen did to the rub rail on his
Cal 29 "Mariposa". http://www.mariposasailing.com/hulldeck.html Not a task
for the faint-hearted, but wow! What an amazing result!

I'm looking for a project boat and may bid on this Cal 20. I've got a
trailer I use for my swing keel Hunter 22. Anyone know much clearance the
Cal 22 keel needs between the hull and the tip of the keel? And how much of
a pain is it to get the mast and standing rigging down and ready for travel?
Appreciate your comments

Derigging is an easy two person job.
--Remove upper shrouds;
--Remove forward lowers;
--slack aft lowers a bit;
--one guy leans forward on the mast while the other guy removes the
forestay;
--the mast leaner walks the mast down halfway;
--the other guy stands behind him in the cockpit and takes the mast the
rest of the way down;
--the freed guy releases the mast step pivot bolt--careful, the step
will pop UP when freed because the guy
who's holding the mast can't walk far enough aft to reach
the balance point;
--the two guys walk the mast forward.
Don't have keel measurements here.

Greg, I have a project boat...MINE!! Where is you located? Me boat lie in Marina del Rey.
Cal Jib Kelly in San Pedro. He rebuilds Cal 20 professionally, so he'd know what you need.
He also sells used sails and other nautical stuff like Minney's but on a smaller scale.
Drat! Another Cal 20 passing me on the race course.
We've had a member who sailed his Cal 20 single handed from Newport to Drakes Bay and back. Yikes. And last year one guy did the Pacific Cup in his. I wonder if he's still in Hawaii?...I mean, once your in Paradise what's the point in returning?

Don't be discouraged when getting passed by another Cal 20. Some of the best sailors in the world are on cal 20's. I spent years eating spray from the rear to mid of the pack! Be one with your boat, have experienced and practiced crew, have local knowledge and you will be right behind the same level skipper who has new sails.

ya know at that price these are going for now, its not worth fixing the

these are an absolute steal on which you can learn so much whether you race

Mark, do you think Jib's Cal 20 was the one I cruised passed by Angel's Gate, while scooting along the break water during last years annual 'Outlaw Regatta'? (labor day weekend, Marina del Rey to Los Alamitos harbor) I was flying two jibs and surfing along going down wind. Woooohoooo! Takes a quick hand at the rudder to keep the boat from broaching, which is great for adrenaline junkies.
Bestest last distance race of the calander, IMHO. Ok, bestest local distance race of the year with possible exception of the Queen Mary Race, between Redondo Beach YC and Shorline YC, first week end of July.
Every other year we can meet and greet the racers gathering for the Trans-Pac, like California Gurl, for instance.

Cal 20's rate 273 nor cal phrf and can sail way beyond that in the right conditions. I've seen 10.3 in Rambler with the kite up for sustained periods.

The 1961 that I almost rescued from P'cola had a custom trailer, the bunks were 3'6" , it was a homebuilt trailer, and rather flimsy as it did fail a few times. Now that I sold my Hunter 22, got my 1989 Catalina 22 Trailer back, am raising the bunks on that one to accommodate my Vic 18. (long keel draws 2')
To modify my trailer is going to take a few cold beers and 2 hours shop time.
http://sailboatdata.com/viewrecord.asp?class_id=28
The Cals have a Fin Keel with a Bulb, thank you Mr. Lapworth for the great design that was 20 years ahead of the curve.
Be certain to put or fabricate a Bow Stand, I used a Boat Stand to keep the vessel from shifting forward on braking, or when the tow truck is hit by a car while in transit. Keep the vessel from shifting forward as much as is physically and practical.
You may be able to adjust, alter the winch post chock a bit and get her to sit and ride correctly on it. Always strap her down on three points, Bow, Amidships and Stern to trailer.
The link Chris posted is a good one, if it has the original specs, if not, then measure twice and make it right.
http://www.cal20.com/TheBoat/tabid/64/Default.aspx
It could have been chopped or lengthened, I have heard horror stories of both being done. So tap the hull, survey the vessel, and have fun.

My trailer, mostly suitable as a storage and not as a travel trailer,
has a bow stop that it about 6" below the rubrail at the bow. It's
mostly of use as a measure of how far onto the trailer you are, because
it's not too sturdy and it bent the last time I actually bumped the boat
into it.
Any such bow holding device is not going to work very well if you use
launch ramps for retrieval. In that case, the trailer is at an angle
but the boat floats (we hope) level. As the trailer comes up the ramp
and levels off, the stern rotates down relative to the trailer
(actually, the back end of the trailer rotates upward). When that
happens, the bow that was touching the bow stop ends up being a few
inches away from it. It's inevitable unless the bow stop is adjustable.
The caution about forward motion of a heavy object when you're braking
is something that most people never think about it. This always worries
me when I see people carrying lumber on a car roof rack or truck rack.
Under heavy braking, the vehicle will slow down but the load will want
to keep going. If it's not properly secured, it can slide off forward,
perhaps with very bad effects. On my boat there is no adequate stop on
the trailer, but the boat is secured by straps that hold down and also
hold back--they are angled aft so they resist forward motion of the boat.
And on the thanks to Mr. Lapworth... he did so much right, didn't he, in
designing well-behaved boats? I'm grateful every time I sail my fine
Cal 20, a little boat that is limited mostly by her skipper's competence.

The knot meter on my cal 20 went to 10 knots and it was pegged for about 2 hours 10 min. dead down wind from Avalon to LA Light with a 25-30 knot Southerly with whisker pole holding a working jig. Caught one wave after another. Did the same with a spin. from the West End of Catalina to LA Light under 2.5 hours.

Cal 20's rate 273 nor cal phrf and can sail way beyond that in the right conditions. I've seen 10.3 in Rambler with the kite up for sustained periods.

Mark, then probably not him. I wonder, if those little boats will go 10 knots wing and wing down wind with their little jibs, whose bright idea was it to give them a 174 PHRF rating? Those Columbia 22's and Santana 22's are also pocket rockets...cute but dangerous.

Re: [Cal_Boats] Re: Cal 20 For Sale in California

I trailered mine from RI to Ottawa. A days drive. The bow stop did very
little to effect any forward motion. The trailer was borrowed from Chris B,
which was custom designed for a 20. Most of the weight is on the bulb with
the stands only acting as supports. I used three 2" ratchet straps to
secure the vessel all crossed in opposite directions, to ensure the vessel
would not move. Crossed several mountain (actually hills) ranges and the
load never shifted once. Since it was such a nice drive, crashed along the
NYS Thruway in a rest station next to the Canal and dreamed all night of
making that run from Canada to NYC in the 20. What a gorgeous drive in the
fall.
What Im saying is that if the boat is properly secured with straps that are
crossed, meaning from front to back, two sets and one one accross the
cockpit leading forward the load is not going to shift unless your in a
collision. At that point its game over anyways. Good brakes, and a good tow
vehicle, and a well balanced trailer (no more then 200 lbs on the tongue)
IMHO are far more important.
Chris B did get his very expensive galvanized CAL-20 back. Thoughts of
keeping her in Ottawa, lasted for only one sleepless night...:) Nice trip
back too.
Keep it simple. Dont over engineer it and balance the load. Check your
brakes and tire pressures about 2 hrs into the drive to make sure all is
well, Then again every six hours. You'll be fine if the tow vehicle is
relatively solid.
I used a 2001 GMC safari with a towing capacity of 6K lbs out of the
factory stock to shuttle 4 boats this way over relatively long distances,.
Mostly a two day drive. Never an incident, never a concern.
Best of luck.

Mike,
You say we have all the fun? I still haven't see a single shark fin down here. Just sea lions, dolphins, sun fish, and occasionally whales. You get to frolic with the Great Whites every time you sail out and back to the Fair Lawns.
I seem to recall one of the Pacific aquariums acquired a female great white a couple of years ago. She didn't need a team of lawyers to get her out of jail (like PETA and the five killer whales), she just went on a hunger strike. Am I right?
The story is there was a Great White down here patrolling the beaches off Marina del Rey, caused quite a sensation and I think they restricted the waters from swimming. I don't get it. Most of the surfers here aren't chubby enuff to interest a hungry white.
And what about all the big breezes you have blowing thru the gate, almost every day? Sailing off Santa Monica Bay is balmy and restful most of the time, which is usually ok by me. We do get our best afternoon breezes in the Spring, usually getting into the mid teens on a regular basis by 2 PM.

OK, OK I give! I never experienced sailing until I sailed in SO CAL at 10 o'clock dark with the #2 genoa up in my shirt sleeves! I thought you had to wear 3 layers at least and then be cold to boot. I did once see a elephant seal leap out of the water near the South East Farallon and a moment later the water turned crimson with his blood as he was cut in half by natures perfect predator. However you are more likely to be capped by a gang banger in the Tenderloin than be eaten by a Great White.
I prefer the Newport/ Ensenada to the singlehanded Farallons and the Great Vallejo Race to both the former---all 3 have good parties!

Mike,
You say we have all the fun?

Mike, it's amazing how cold it gets down here in the wee hours, off shore, with everything at 110% humidity and your fingers wrinkled up and sticky wet...I'm talking, August! I remember shivering and chattering my way, sailing up to S.B. for the S.B. to K.H. race in my foulies, huddled under a sleeping bag, in light mist. But yes, it can get blazing hot by mid morning, with no breeze up yet. And like NorCal, we can have our hotest weather in Sept. In fact, the hottest day on record was one day in the 1930's, off Santa Barbara, in the 130 plus range. Go figure..strange atmospheric conditions.
But for tropical balmy-ness, nothing beats chilling in Ft. Lauderdale for a New York area college student during Winter break...going from ice and snow drifts to palm trees, surf and sand, and bikinis on the beach.
For you right coasties, just to make you jealous, the trees are flowering in my back yard, the bees are buzzin around collecting pollen, and the birds are chirping early in the AM like it was Spring. Don't they know Punxsutawney Philsaid "six more weeks of winter..or did he?"

When we train new crew for the local schooner, we instruct them that the
coldest they will ever be in Michigan is in August (or any other summer
month) in the middle of Lake Michigan at night. Of course, they don't
believe us, but the second time they sail they are well equipped with
winter clothing.

You never know, there are quite a few Cal 20's here in the harbor..many from cbyc.....a cal 20 in the right surfing conditions will surf ddw wing n wing for hours at 10 knots without ever loosing control.

By the way, Jib Kelly took the Cal 20 Nationals in 2011.

Jerry.

I'm looking for a project boat and may bid on this Cal 20. I've got a trailer I use for my swing keel Hunter 22. Anyone know much clearance the Cal 22 keel needs between the hull and the tip of the keel? And how much of a pain is it to get the mast and standing rigging down and ready for travel?
Appreciate your comments
Greg
