Dodger

Hello Group, I think my extra late winter project is designing a dodger for my 30' Lippincott sloop. Does anyone have any experience deigning one? I can't seem to figure out how high and at what slope(s) or angle to build this thing. Sewing, fabric, etc. is not the issue here....it's the initial design using 1" ss tubing. Advice, suggestions, references from anyone having one this project in the recent past will be appreciated. Also, still waiting for an invitation to sail/cruise/race while I'm in San Diego 3rd week in March. Thanks, -Ira

Sailrite has a video on how to do this. I used it when I replaced my dodger. I think I still have it. It was about 8 years ago and the video is low tech VHS. When I did it, I used the existing frame, so I was not actually designing it. Their instructions are really quite good. At one point, when I had a question, I called Sailrite. One of them got on the phone and talked me through my question. If I had it to do over again, I would have done some designing and used a different frame. It is important to think about where lines are led, whether it will interfere with the swing of a cabin top winch handle, etc. I have sewn all of the canvas on my boat, but if I do not think I would do a dodger again. This one I would hire out second time around. Terry On Jan 30, 2012, at 6:13 AM, ira wrote: > Hello Group, > I think my extra late winter project is designing a dodger for my 30' Lippincott sloop. I agree with Terry on this one, and your wisdom is well placed. I have replaced 60+ Dodgers and Windscreens on everything from sweet sailing vessels to run-abouts. Preparation and a good mounting point or points is where the sweet spot is. Go SS frame and do it right the first time, Run all lines proper, that way when it does fail in a gust, least you still have sail control. On one I did we angled up to the frame, A style, that left room for working lines and a flap inside/back allowed easy management.the canvas lasts 5 seasons, or so. If you can find a frame that fits it, then take that to an Upholsterer and have them stitch it up for you. Otherwise have the Upholstery shop make the frame and canvas to custom fit that deck. Have Fun Upholstery Business for 30 years. now retired and playing on little boats. --- In Ca… [at] yahoogroups.com, Terry Spencer <tspencer@...> wrote: > > Sailrite has a video on how to do this. any remote chance anyone knows of a cruising 36 with a dodger, or a shop which has built such a thing? Reggie
