Carrying a 8' hard dinghy on a Cal 39 foredeck?
Mark2012-02-15 01:38
Cal 39 owners:
I'm thinking about buying a 8' hard dinghy (e.g., like a Walker Bay) as a tender for my Cal 39. Without getting into all the debates involved in the hard vs. inflatable decision, I'm wondering if any Cal 39 owners have experience carrying a hard dinghy on their foredecks while underway, and I'm curious about the clearance for tacking a roller-furled genoa over it. Also, if anyone has experience doing so, I'm interested to hear what your approach has been to lashing it down. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Hi Mark,, Maybe you should consider one of those porta-boats that fold up. I have a Cal 2-27 friend that has a 18' one that saves a lot of space, and is very compact to take on his boat. I have been thinking of alternatives to a dinghy as well and looking at that option. Good luck in your search! Jim Ives - Kool BeansRochester, NY

Or a nesting pram? I'm finishing up a 8' that folds to 4'. Haven't figured out how to lash it on deck yet so I'm glad that you brought it up!

I would ask myself when buying any dingy, If I have to leave in the middle of a night or day during a sudden storm condition with breaking seas and high waves how will it tow and if it swamps will it survive being subjected to the stress of an 8' fishing lure taking multiple dives?
Just a thought.

Carrying a 8' hard dinghy on a Cal 39 foredeck? Mark Miller
ti… [at] ch2m.com2012-02-15 22:49 UTC
I would think your roller furling sail would have no problem tacking over a boat, unless it is a deck sweeper (which would rarely be found on a roller furler, IMHO.)
We tack over a spinnaker pole all the time, which probably has a similar height profile.
Key point is to not have an exposed edge that catches the lazy sheet during a tack.
As for securing the boat, a number of ways could be used. I would first look into padeyes.
There is also a Kit boat with $65 plans, that might work well on a foredeck, if you modified it a bit to fit and conform to the cabin top - keeping much of the dinghy as possible off the forepeak of the deck. The design naturally has a relief at the bolting section than could be exploited to make it really fit nicely.
The kit boat is set up to motor, row, or sail

We simply put the tow line around a winch and cranked the dingy along side of the cal 20, both of us grabbed the side of the dingy rolled it to where the water spilled out. We were wing and wing with whisker pole up and surfing. There were no damages to the dingy or the cal. It was definitely a two man job!

It certainly is. I would say I have never seen so much bird poop but there
was this powerboat...
I would post the pictures but you don't want to see them.

>> Subject: [Cal_Boats] Carrying a 8' hard dinghy on a Cal 39 foredeck?
>>
>> ****
>>
>> Cal 39 owners:
>> I'm thinking about buying a 8' hard dinghy (e.g., like a Walker Bay) as a
>> tender for my Cal 39. Without getting into all the debates involved in the
>> hard vs. inflatable decision, I'm wondering if any Cal 39 owners have
>> experience carrying a hard dinghy on their foredecks while underway, and
>> I'm curious about the clearance for tacking a roller-furled genoa over it.
>> Also, if anyone has experience doing so, I'm interested to hear what your
>> approach has been to lashing it down. Any input would be greatly
>> appreciated.
>>
>> Thanks,
