CAL Keel

Howdy, All. I feel like I'm doing a Timm right now, producing photographs of the topic at hand. Photo No. 3 is a side shot of the bottom of the front of the keel of a CAL 25 (similar to all deep keel encapsulated CALs). We are obviously early in the rebuild process on this one. Photo No. 1, which looks a bit weird, is a rear view of the same part. Starting at the bottom, there is an impregnated mat that is the outside surface. Then a thing layer of what looks like straight poly. Then a layer of impregnated thick roving. Above that, the thick part looks to be poly with a bunch of filler of some sort. It is porous and cracked a lot when we were "disassembling" the boat. I think they dumped that in to fill the space just before they dropped in the lead slug. We used to have some folks who worked at the plant on this list. If still here, please correct me. IHMO, the thick porous fill would not be good to run screws into. I believe that is the same base as at the bottom of the back of the keel. However, as with dinosaur hunting, it is sometimes hard to find some of the pieces. I don't know if this is instructive, but it is as close as I could come to an MRI of the boat build. Cheers Charlie
