Danny, congratulations on your new CAL. It sounds like you have a big
project in front of you. I am nearing completion of a year long rebuild of my
CAL 9.2. It has been a lot of work!
I think there might be owners manuals posted somewhere on this site, if not
I bet you can do a search on the Cal 34 to see the different layout
options.
As far as anchors go, the answer you are looking for depends on where you
sail and the bottom types you plan to anchor in, I.E. sand, mud, rocky,
etc..
After finding the best anchor type, you can look at the manufacturers
recommendations for the size of your boat. I carry a front and stern anchor made
by "Fortress" (_http://www.fortressanchors.com/fortress_anchor_guide.html_
(http://www.fortressanchors.com/fortress_anchor_guide.html) ). I always go
a size bigger for peace of mind. I also carry a storm anchor which is
several sizes bigger by Fortress. For instance, my boat is 30", Fortress
recommends the FX-11 but I bought the FX-16 for bow & stern, and the FX-23 for
the storm. I like the fact that they disassemble, which is how I store the
storm anchor. If I need it, it only takes a few minutes to assemble it.
This is a great list with many very helpful and knowledgeable sailors. Ask
and you shall receive.
Good Luck;

On the West coast we can have rocky bottoms, kelp, and muck. I carry both a generic Danforth and a generic Bruce yhat I got from a store that has "West" in the name, but I can't remember what else. I think I'm having a senior moment, since I was just at the store last evening looking at jackets on sail. It's not called West Systems, that's for sure. Enjoy reading up on anchors and agonizing about what size to use, that's what I did, but I went smaller 'cause there isn't that much room in my boat, and I don't think I've as much windage as a 25' power cruiser, anyway. But I'm more of a dare devil with a death wish.
Jerry
PS I went to look at a 26' Ranger yesterday, for 350 pahpishkies. I've never seen a boat as badly trashed in my life, and I could see the cost of repairs would make it a lousy deal. Torn out stanchions, torn out bow and stern pulpits, port hole frames crumbling, winches missing, deck paint shot, bottom covered in hanging green muck. Otherwize, nice boat. What really turned me off is that it had less room in the V berth than me wee Cal 24.

Found a good anchour. And found that you need around a pound of anchor per foot of boat. Did get a 50 pounder to moor boat until I sell my Tartan 27.
Now I am looking for some good used sails and rebuild the transmission.

Was given a Grampian 23. Had to leave it because it was crap.
If the economy does not recover we will be seeing more abandoned boats and free boats.
