Charlie, haven't used one or for that matter seen one "in the flesh", but
on Ship-Shape-TV this past Sunday, they showed one....... unfortunately,
I forgot to rewind my VCR tape before setting it to record the program
while I wasn't home...... s all I got was the brief "teaser" mentioning
that they were going to check one out. Oh, well..... it will be repeated!
Looked funny, seeing someone screwing a 16oz propane cylinder into an
outboard! I wonder how long a cylinder lasts? At around $4.00 each around
here, and technically non-refillable....... it better last as long or
longer than 1-gallon of gasoline!

So they said "about an hour" on the propane can. My 4 stroke 6 (Tohatsu, Mercury, Nissan - all are the same engine) does about ½ gallon an hour. Based on the discussion, the weight would be about the same? My 4 stroke 6 ( a one cylinder - the next size up at 8 horses is two cylinders and weighs over 100lb) rattles like an SOB, sometimes throws itself into gear when idling. Took it back for repair. No apparent fix on a one cylinder. Looks like the propane engine is almost identical except for fuel. I was told that it is louder.
Oh for the days of my 2 stroke Nissan 8. Great engine.
Cheers
Charlie

My friend who just donated away his Cal 20 had a one-cyl. 4-stroke OB on
it. It shook like crazy at idle too. I was just pondering that. I've
got a 1938 Johnson one cyl., 2-stroke 2 h.p. engine and it's quiet and
subdued. But if you double the number of strokes per bang on that
single cylinder, it's understandable that it's not very smooth. You'd
think that the design for small 4-stroke engines would focus on 2 small
cylinders for balance.

Chris, remember those Honda 50's and 90's motorbikes of yesterday? Smooth as glass. My Zooki 4, one cylinder two stroke shakes the boat pretty good, but maybe less than yer one banger. You'd think they'd put in a flywheel to smooth it out, but that would increase the weight. Good thing we is sailing most of the time. Smooooothhhh!

See first picture....worked for me. Kept 5 new bottles on the go all the
times. 20 lbs bottles lasted more then six month for the galley stove a
simple coleman that replaced the alcohol double burner.

Cost of fitting on ebay was I think 10 bucks. 4 Cans at walmart I think
was 15.00. Dont concern yourself with the valve. You dont need to
completely fill them as the amount that is lost from not doing this is
incremental. Safety glasses and gloves are required as the stuff is really
cold.
