Re: [Cal_Boats] Boom Vang - Jim
Hi Jim,
Just noticed this email so sorry for not getting back quicker. The
advantage is that you can pull the boom down harder (obvious). I have 20
to 1 and it is way more than I need. I have that for some reasons that are
unique to my boat.
If you look at the expensive rigid vangs that Garhauer sells, I think they
are in the 18 to 20 to 1 range. Also, look at this page from harken
http://www.harken.com/rigtips/BoomVang.php and you will see the 8:1 that I
was talking about.
The thing is that with a vang, you can run a cascade system easily because
the distance doesn't change that much. You can get 8:1 with 4 single
blocks and they can cascade down in size as every one down carries 1/2 the
load. It is a good idea to have the vang control line go to the cockpit so
you can dump it if you are running a spinnaker and are in danger of
rounding up. Serious racers use a double ended design and run it to both
sides of the cockpit so it really is worth taking one line back there and
just installing a cam cleat there rather than getting a fiddle block with a
cam cleat.
But then again it depends on how big your boat is. A Cal-20 probably needs
something completely different than a Cal-40. Papoose is 36 feet and the
20:1 is nice although like I said overkill. I get the 20:1 by 5:1 times
4:1 and the geometry of the design I have requires the 5:1 and I just
bought two fiddles to get the 4:1. If I had it to do over again, I would
do 10:1 but I have it and there is very little disadvantage to having too
much purchase.
The 8:1 with 4 single blocks is 2:1 x 2:1 x 2:1. Use Amsteel on all except
the line going back to the cockpit. Easy to splice and doesn't stretch.
You can probably get 8:1 this way for about the same cost as 4:1 using
fiddle blocks. Plus, it looks really cool to have cascaded blocks on your
boat :-)
I will draw it up and make a web page of it if you want.
