Greetings,, I am looking to add a boom vang to Kool Beans and wondering if anyone has one for sale (reasonable!). It dosen't have to be fancy, just need to get the job done. Thank you all in advance! Jim Ives - Kool BeansRochester, NY

Three single blocks and a cam cleat back at the cockpit. 4:1. If you want
more purchase just add some blocks or use multi blocks. Of course, if you
have a cabin sliding hatch, you would need some kind of turning block or
deck organizer.

Hi, Jim. Do you already have a vang set-up and you are replacing, or are you starting from scratch. Parts pictures are for fresh start.
Absolutely agree with Reggie. Garhauer is good stuff (no financial connection, etc.). If you have a block with cam cleat at the top on the block connected to the boom, you won't need the deck stuff (assuming that you can reach the cleat from the cockpit). Total for the two parts is about $100. This takes 3/8" line, which should be plenty. Just make sure that the screws/rivets you use at the fitting boom connection are not in a vertical row. I once busted a boom in two that way during a very interesting thunderstorm.
The vang attach picture is a decent mount for the boom end. Either that or you can use a canvas strap with the attachment thingys (thingies?) that fit into your boom sail slide. Bottom attachment can be some kind of eye strap or padeye attached to base of mast.
Cheers
Charlie

the "strap thingy" boom attachment works well. In fact, I may have a vang with "strap thingy" laying around. Not sure when I'll have time to dig. I replaced it with a new rigid vang from Garhauer.

Hope this sketch comes through. It is an 8:1 vang with 4 single blocks.
There are lots of potential variations.

Reggie is dead on on this one. You will have the extra added bonus of it
fitting your boat right out of the box. Garhauer makes quality equipment
and I think they have a lifetime guarantee against failure.

And if you want to go cheap, you can get a 5.4:1 system with two blocks,
and a couple or $4 rings from REI. Just use nice, but small, blocks for
the actual control line, that is the bottom two blocks. Then use
These<http://www.rei.com/product/745608/omega-pacific-rappel-ring>
instead
of the upper two blocks. Use Amsteel as it is click and your loss through
the rings is significant but not huge. Your 8:1 system will degrae to
about 5.4 : 1 because of the friction in the rings due to the Amsteel but
you now have a system you can make for about $60 that will be better than
systems coating way over $100.
The lower blocks are only taking maybe 100 pounds (twice what you can
pull). The REI rings are rated for 5000 pounds so 1000 SWL, strong enough.
For that matter, you could use 4 of the $15 blocks from Garhauer and it
wold be strong enough. If you were worried, use a ring for the top one
which gets you to 6.6:1. That would cost about $70 (plus line).

I have an unused Garhauer rigid vang that I had made for my Cal 31 but never
installed. The reason I never installed it was that it would interfere with
my air conditioner that, when being used, sits in the main hatch opening.
Garhauer currently sells this vang for boats in the 28-44 ft. range for
$495. I am willing to take $250 plus shipping.
