Ozone Generator

Hi all I remember a thread on this list or maybe another about using a rental ozone generator to kill mildew in a boat. I have that problem with a boat I am thinking of buying. It has been shut up for a very long time and is pretty bad. So my question is does the ozone do any bleaching of paper, fabrics, wood ec. Thanks Dan R

My understanding is that Ozone will kill all the live and active biologicals on your vessel. It will not clean them off the wood but being dead, they are easier to remove and the benefit is that they are _all_dead. So in that manner, its not up to your cleaning efforts to get it all, rather the ozone kills all the stuff for you. Then you have to remove it. As far as I understand there is no bleaching involved. But I could be wrong. Ask around the marine, or talk to a boat detailer to see what they have to say. /ch On Sat, Feb 25, 2012 at 10:39 AM, richmondj50 <da… [at] gmail.com> wrote: > Hi all > I remember a thread on this list or maybe another about using a rental ozone generator to kill mildew in a boat. Yes they work, like all chemicals and gases and chemicals some common sense and caution should be used. Some guys in P'cola rented one to do a house in Florida, it worked. They rented the thing from Chicago, it was a few years back, after Hurricane Opal and Ivan I have known of people that used them, in houses. I do remember some cautioning about Manufactured Homes and Vessels. Just be careful, read the manual, seal it up tight, ventilate it properly.

I've run an ozone generator a couple of times already this year (because the first time wasn't long enough). It doesn't effect anything but mold, mildew, bacteria, and odors. I ran it on the boat - a 2-29. The first go was for couple of hours, the second time was a week later for closer to three hours. I don't recall the output of the machine, but know that I had it turned up to whatever the highest output is. And the machine isn't slight, it's about the sized of a bread box. I didn't take anything out of the boat; just made sure any vents were closed and let it run. When I came back after a few hours I turned it off, opened the boat and let it air for 30-45 minutes with a fan on before spending any significant time below.
