I would first check the accuracy of your tach, using a laser tachometer. Then run the engine at 2200 rpm and note the boat speed. The tach is mechanical and old so you have a good point that it might be off. With the engine 56 years old I just need it to run another 2 hours so running it at full rated revs isn't happening before the rebuild. The engine guy is Dave Van Ness web site<http://www.vannessengineering.com/> and I believe he told me that the operating range was 1200-1300 RPM so I don't even know for sure 2200 is in the cards even after the rebuild although 2200 doesn't sound very high for an engine. So we have a chicken and egg thing here. Need the new engine to test the prop and need to prob before the new engine. What to do??? Re: [Cal_Boats] Prop question - Joe

Allen Edwards2012-03-07 04:47 UTC
Joe, The tack reads 60 RPM high. I have a clip on tack on my automotive voltmeter. I have to assume that is correct. I tested from 500 to 1300 RPM and it is pretty much 60 RPM high and not a percentage. That means that I am doing 5.7 kt at 1440RPM. Thanks for raising that issue. I talked to Martec and they felt that I had a 14RH7 as they only made 3 different props back in the old days and that was the one I probably had given that Lapworth specified 14RH8. However, the original engine was 25HP at 2000RPM 91 cubic inch vs mine that is 31HP @ 2200 rpm 112 cubic inch. Apparently my engine is not as old as the boat. The owners at Martec knew my boat. Their dad raced against when they were young. They recommended a 14RH10 and as I am told that the 2 blade Martec folding prop has more slip than a more conventional prop, I felt that was consistent with your recommendation as well. Also, the engine rebuilder, also a sailor, felt that was the correct prop and closer in performance to the three blade 13RH9 that was on the boat when I got it. So, I ordered a new prop. I hope it is the right one.
